Hurricane Matthew Emergency Relief

Tuesday, October 4th. A day that no Haitian will ever forget. This was the day that the Category 4 Hurricane Matthew swept through Haiti. The destruction wreaked on the country can hardly be fathomed. It is one of the strongest storms that hit Haiti in the last half-century. More than one thousand people died, not to mention the homes and farms that were demolished and the livestock that were killed.The south and northwest regions of Haiti were hit the hardest.

This tragedy has personally affected me and my family in many ways.  Aside from other severe damages, our house was sheltering 26 people. This number included neighbors whose houses were destroyed. Then during the second day of the storm, a tree fell on the house. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but then the next morning, the remainder of the house was destroyed. Because there were no other options for shelter, they had to remain there. Additionally, my aunt’s back was broken when her house fell on her during the second day of the storm. She had to stay there with her five-year-old daughter overnight until she was found stuck in beneath the house. Her daughter sustained a blow to the head.


How can you get involved in assisting with this tragedy? - Homes have been destroyed: many have been flooded or are missing roofs or walls. The most urgent needs are food and clean water, hygienic supplies, shelter, medical, with such afflictions as cholera, fevers, hunger, dehydration, and coughs. All the proceeds will go directly to my family to meet those needs.
