Hurricane Maria: Chargers

Donation protected
Puerto Rico had a nasty wake-up call from Hurricane Maria on Wednesday, September 20th, 2017.

The eyewall of Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 hurricane with winds gusts of up to 155 mph, moved onshore and the hurricane could not have had a more direct hit.
It is said to have been "the strongest hurricane to directly hit Puerto Rico since 1932".

It has been reported that all 3.5 million residents of Puerto Rico are without power and it will take 4 to 6 months to regain power.

Most of the images at the moment show the devastation in the San Juan area. The "metro" area as it is called is the home to most of the American and foreign companies with offices on the island. It is also the home of many resorts, upscale high rises and shopping centers.

Unfortunately the rest of the island has a much weaker infrastructure with many houses made of wood and corrugated zinc. Although these houses do exist in the "metro" area they are much more prevalent in the smaller towns around the island.

Poor neighborhoods are devastated, power lines are down, houses and/or their roof are gone. Entire subdivisions are flooded and many residents withstood the hurricane from the roof of their house.

The condition of my family and friends on the west coast is unknown as emergency crews have not been able to reach that side of the island due to the heavy flooding and debris on the roads.

Needless to say, it will take time and money to help restore power and other services. Asking for help is tough and at this moment we really don't know what is really needed (besides everything!).

I've started this campaign in hopes of being able to purchase and distribute small portable solar chargers to some of the poor neighborhoods on the west coast of the island.

With electricity being out for many months these solar chargers will help people stay in touch via their portable electronics.

I would love to distribute 100 chargers around the west coast of Puerto Rico and ANY help you can provide will help me get there.

Please help in any way you can, every bit adds up and will provide a lifeline to those that really need it.

Thank you,

Brenda
