Please Support our 'Fall Fund Drive for Dogs' and Help us Save the Lives of Thousands of Dogs in Need.

The Humane Society of Louisiana, a grassroots, New Orleans based charity, has been helping dogs for more than 25 years. From passing new anti-dogfighting laws or operating pet rescue and adoption programs, we've got a special place in our heart for man's best friend.

We are now working to realize our most ambitious project to date, operating the state's premier and largest no-kill shelter in Mount Hermon, Louisiana, the Enoch J. Donaldson Animal Sanctuary.  Once we have raised needed funds to construct dog housing and fencing at the site, we'll be able to greatly expand our rescue efforts for man's best friend.

We currently save hundreds of dogs from local shelters where they might otherwise be destroyed. The animals are placed through a combination of local adoption efforts and our 'TRANSPUPTATION' program that relocates Louisiana shelter dogs to waiting families and no-kill rescue groups up north.  We estimate that with sufficient resources and housing, we could save an additional 2,000 dogs or more per year!!

Funds raised in this drive will be used for fencing, dog yards, dog beds, dog houses, puppy quarantine areas and building supplies. In Phase 2 of Barkitecture, we will design and build eco-friendly, climate controlled indoor/outdoor runs on the property which will open onto large doggie play yards.

Won't you please help us reach our fundraising goal? We recently held our first annual BARKITECTURE dog house building competition to kick off the drive. Volunteer 'barkitects' collected close to a dozen one-of-a-kind dog houses to help protect dogs at the sanctuary, we are still far from reaching our goal.  The dogs are counting on us, so please share and contribute if you can, as you help us reach our goal.

The winners of the Barkitecture competition are as follows, and are featured in the photos below.  Our judges had a hard time choosing from among so many great new houses. Thanks SO much to all who participated.

Thanks to all of our recent donors to our Fall Fund Drive for Dogs. The beneficiaries of your kindness would LOVE to thank you in person, with tails wagging and lots of happy barking. Here's a picture of Gilly, who was just saved from euthanasia at a shelter. Throughout this drive, we'll be posting pictures of dogs our donors are helping. Please help us by sharing and spreading the word to other dog lovers.

The Humane Society's efforts for dogs keep rolling along. Please share and support our campaign so we can help more dogs. In the last few weeks, we've been able to relocate 60 homeless pets from down South to our adoption partners up north using our TransPUPtation van. Whenever we can, we take kitties along on the rescue road, too! The sooner we can raise the funds for needed additions to the new Enoch J. Donaldson sanctuary, we can help more animals in need.

The judges and people have spoken! Our dog house building competition winners are: BEST IN SHOW, First Bark & Trust Towers , MOST UNIQUE - Mi Castle es Su Castle and PEOPLE's CHOISE - Mine, Mine (Military Style Dog House). The houses will be shipped to Mt. Hermon today so that dogs in need can begin enjoying them right away as they await their forever homes. Thanks to everyone who participated by generously contributing a house and/or by participating in our first 'Strut for Pups' walk yesterday at Lakeside Mall. The 'Barkitecture' contest may have ended, but our fund drive continues. Please continue to ask friends and family to donate until we reach our goal. The doggies are counting on us.
