What Happened?

On July 3rd 2008, Mason, then 18 was involved in an auto accident.  He was driving his parents SUV when he lost control on a sharp curve. The vehicle crossed into the other lane and was struck by a dump truck.

Mason was flown to the University of MD Shock Trauma Center ICU where he stayed for 6 weeks. Mason was paralyzed and comatose from a traumatic brain injury.  Doctors were not sure he would survive but after 6 weeks he was transferred to the Brain Injury Unit at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital in Philadelphia where he stayed for 11 months.  After 5 months of being at Bryn Mawr Mason came out of the coma.

Mason returned home on July 28th 2009 were he has continued to improve, surprise and charm everyone.

Why UTAH?

What’s in Utah? A facility called Neuro Worx. Brian and Sylvia (Mason's Dad and Mom) were turned on to this place by their friends at Pivot Physical Therapy. Sylvia and the therapist talked to the director, Jan Black, told her about Mason and history. She is very excited to have Mason in their outpatient program.

When?

He will be admitted to the outpatient program, January 4th 2016.

Logistics are:

Mason and Sylvia will have to either fly or take that road trip in the Van that Mason keeps talking about. If he flies, commercial airlines don’t have adequate accommodations for somebody like Mason.

Brian would drive the van out ahead of time with Masons things, locate where they would live for the next 5 weeks and make sure they have a good landing. If they all drive together, it is a 4 to 5 day road trip, across the heart of the United States in the middle of winter. Now that’s  a road trip!

They will need to pay for portions of the visits, living expenses and traveling too. Some fundraising will have to be done, but no matter what, this is going to happen.

Somebody asked Brian, “How did Sylvia get Mason in this program so far away?" Guess they don’t know Sylvia very well.

How the funds will help?

~The cost for Brian to travel to Utah to deliver all of Mason's Medical equipment. (4+ day trip driving across county and back.)
~The cost for Brian, Sylvia and Mason to travel to Utah. (4+ day trip one way)
~Airfare for Brian to return home and to visit and assist with rehab in Utah.
~Housing for Sylvia and Mason for at least 5 weeks in Utah.
~Rental of Medical equipment while in Utah.
~Multitude of co-pays and uninsured medical expenses.
