How you can help
Your tax deductible contribution will help us preserve and protect this unique place of inspiration for future generations with themes important to all Americans: the struggle for freedom, opportunity and love for family.
The New Philadelphia Association seeks to raise $250,000 toward the purchase of New Philadelphia, Illinois, a 42-acre historically significant, privately owned archaeological site that represents abolitionism at work. After acquiring the land, the New Philadelphia Association will donate the property to the National Park Service, which is currently considering the site for inclusion in the National Park System. Protected and conserved as a unit of the National Park Service, New Philadelphia will tell the nation and the world its remarkable story, part of the westward expansion of our country, whose very existence defied the odds and whose founder applied funds earned from property sales to purchase freedom for enslaved family members.

Now an archaeological site, New Philadelphia is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, designated as a National Historic Landmark, included as a member of the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program and, through an act of Congress, is currently being considered for inclusion in the National Park Service. A racially diverse community, formerly enslaved and free born African Americans lived here alongside European Americans during one of the most racially turbulent eras of our country’s history.  The New Philadelphia Association has a Letter of Intent to Purchase agreement that must be executed before the land is sold.  The established land price is slightly lower than the  current market value. Under stewardship of the NPS, federal protection laws would protect New Philadelphia from inappropriate use, looting or speculators hoping to capitalize on potential federal, state or private acquisition.
Who we are
The New Philadelphia Association 501 (c) (3), founded in 1996 is a grassroots organization comprised of descendants of Frank McWorter, local citizens, historians, archaeologists and other interested individuals, and is dedicated to the research of New Philadelphia, where archaeological investigation has already yielded information of major scientific importance to our understanding of free, racially diverse communities of the American frontier and to encourage movement beyond traditional archaeological research methods.  Currently there is no resource type in the National Park Service comparable to New Philadelphia.

Nestled in the heart of America, New Philadelphia, Illinois, a nationally significant town site that represents freedom, devotion to family and abolitionism will be sold in the fall of 2017.

In 1836, Frank McWorter founded New Philadelphia, Illinois, and secured his place in history as the first African-American to a plat and legally register a town in our nation. Born into slavery, McWorter purchased freedom for his wife Lucy in 1817 and his own in 1819 and purchased property in Illinois - all through his own earnings. Frank McWorter sold lots in New Philadelphia to African and European Americans alike and applied profits earned through property sales to purchase freedom for at least sixteen enslaved family members. New Philadelphia became a racially diverse community where formerly enslaved and free-born African Americans lived alongside European Americans during one of the most racially strident eras of our country’s history.

The New Philadelphia Association, a grassroots non-profit organization formed in 1996 to protect and promote the historic town site, seeks to raise $250,000 to purchase the site of New Philadelphia, a 42-acre historically significant, privately owned archaeological site that represents abolitionism at work. After acquiring the land and following approval for inclusion, the New Philadelphia Association will donate the property to the National Park Service to ensure the heroic story of Frank McWorter and the remarkable town he founded is perpetually preserved to tell the nation and the world its compelling story. New Philadelphia is part of the westward expansion of the United States and a place of inspiration for present and future generations with themes important to all Americans: the struggle for freedom, opportunity and love for family.

New Philadelphia is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, designated a National Historic Landmark, included as a site on the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program, is included in the Smithsonian Museum of American History’s exhibition The Nation We Build Together, and through an act of Congress, is currently being considered for inclusion in the National Park System. Under the stewardship of the National Park System, New Philadelphia will forever be place of education and enjoyment to visitors from the world over.

Your tax deductible contribution of $10, $20, $50 or more will help the New Philadelphia Association achieve its goal to protect the legacy Frank McWorter and the remarkable town he founded, “…a nationally significant archeological site advancing our understanding of free, rural communities and the abolitionist cause in the antebellum era” (National Historic Landmark plaque). New Philadelphia is part of the westward expansion of our country, whose very existence defied the odds and inspires current and future generations.

New Philadelphia Association was able to raise enough funds to make a down payment on the 20 acres of land and purchased it in September, 2017. Thank you to all who contributed. We still are fundraising to maintain the land we have purchased and to move this Historic site forward. Marynel C. NPA Board Member
