Howell Tribute Sculpture

Sue Howell founded WERC in 1990 after several years of volunteering at the Youth Science Institute in San Jose. For more than 25 years the center has been located on Sue’s property in Morgan Hill and she has devoted her life to the rehabilitation of native wildlife and the education of thousands of children in local schools. A part of The Taste of Morgan Hill since its inception, the public has been treated to close up views of raptors and mammals and snakes along with displays and conversation about native habitats and the importance of living in harmony with the wildlife found there. Sue has also been a staunch supporter of the community; she has been a part of the Chamber of Commerce for many years and is a Chamber Ambassador. Her educational ambassadors have been a part of many community events in the south county over the years. She is a member of NWRA (National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association), and founding member of CCWR (California Council of Wildlife Rehabilitators).

In honor of all Sue’s contributions to the community, Board Member Teresa Stephenson has taken a proposal to the Morgan Hill City Council, and gotten approval for, the installation of a life size bronze of Loki on the wildlife trail at the CRC. Loki was there at the beginning of W.E.R.C. and was a big part of the education and rehabilitation effort. He was the original logo for the center and passed away at age 20.

The bronze will be created by Evelyn Davis, noted local sculptor of Liberty the bobcat, installed on the wildlife trail; The Dear Family, recently installed on the median downtown and the bronze ‘Once Upon a Mushroom’ at the entrance to the library. She is known for her wildlife sculptures and also volunteered at WERC for many years.
