Help Funding Hoshi's Eye Surgeries

Hello everyone,

Hoshi, one of my two beloved Shiba Inus who travelled with us from Washington, DC to come live in Paris in 2013, had to be taken to a veterinary ophthalmologist on 30 June 2017, as he had been squinting and pawing at his right eye. I also noticed the rapid development of a cataract which signalled something to be urgently checked out.

After an electroretinography (ERG) and an ultrasound examination, the vet found that his eye pressure was normal (no glaucoma) and his retina healthy. However, the vet found a benign tumour and explained that the sudden appearance of the cataract was caused by the tumour.

The vet proposed an eye-saving laser surgery to remove the tumour. Without the surgery, I was told that the growing tumour will eventually cause him to lose his eye. The vet will also perform a second surgery to remove the cataract (via phacoemulsification) so he can regain vision in the eye. Even with such a delicate procedure, I was told that he had a 90% chance of full recovery.

Between seeing him lose an eye and having a 90% chance at saving it, the choice was clear. I want to save his eye, so he can enjoy his vision for however many years he has left with us.

His eye surgery is scheduled for Monday, 3 July 2017.

As time is of the essence with his eye, I need all of the help I can get to fund as much as possible with help from the community. The estimated veterinary total of both surgeries and clinic fees will be around 2000 EUR.

If there is a surplus amount, I intend to donate it to the Washington, DC Shiba Inu Rescue (DCSIR).

Thank you in advance for any support you can help us with for Hoshi's eye surgery.

Hoshi had his first post-operation visit at the veterinary ophthalmologist today... The "Cone of Shame" has finally been removed as the eye has been healing very nicely. The best part is that he can see out of the eye again. He needs to continue the drops in his eye for the next three months as it continues to heal. His next checkup is in a month.

Thank you again so much to all of his supporters. We are so very grateful to you!!!
Hoshi, always happy to get cheese!

We are home and Hoshi is resting after the successful surgeries to remove the tumour and the cataract. He will have to take it easy for a week, which will not be hard because he is a lazy little guy.

His post-op checkup is in 8 days and he will have to wear the cone of shame until then. He will have regular checkups with the veterinary ophthalmologist in a month, then in three months and then every six months.
Hoshi resting.
