Horses of Gili is a not for profit organization located on Gili Trawangan a small Indonesian Island between Bali and Lombok. The 3 Gili's as they are called have no motorized transport only horses/ponies, bicycles, and walking. For many years the welfare of the horses has been a major concern. Nearly 4 years ago we founded horses of Gili to help with education of locals, provide medical care for horses and ponies, assist with twice annual free horse clinic, and to rescue and rehabilitate sick or injured horses. With the help of many other individuals and organizations we have all made great strides in improving the general overall care and standards of living for the working horses and ponies here. We went through a series of devastating earthquakes during August and September of 2018. These damaged our existing stables badly as well as depleted all of our funds since we used any funds we had and all donations at that time to feed the horses on all 3 Gili Islands.
Fast forward to now January 2019. We have had one successful horse clinic in November which saw nearly 300 horses and ponies and all 3 islands are well on their way to economic and physical recovery. Everyone is rebuilding and tourists are returning (the islands primary source of income). We have very fortunately located a nice piece of land close to our original stables (the current ones are not only very badly damaged but also flood when it rains), this land is very suitable for a new stable, in a good location, has great drainage, and the lease is very affordable. Our plan is to build proper stables there to continue our work and to also provide a better standard of care to the rescue horses who we take in several times yearly.
This is where we need your help. We simply do not have the funds to build the new stables. We have paid 6 months of the 1 year lease and have drawn up a simple and affordable stable plan. It will have plenty of room and storage and also decrease workload by providing attached exercise areas to each stall (currently we hand exercise horses each day). We even have a very friendly local builder helping us to get the best prices on materials and he has offered to donate some of his time to help us construct the stables. There will be 7 stalls, a wash rack, a separate tack room and feed room, and perimeter fencing to protect the horses in the event of a loose horse coming around. The builders estimate is between 40,000,000 IDR and 50,000,000 IDR for the complete project. Once we have funds it will only take a few weeks since we are using all natural materials like bamboo and wood it will be sturdy yet easy to build.
