HOP Public Health Clinic: Manos Para Cuidarte
In all of our previous medical HOP campaigns, we have noticed one common theme: a lot of 'healthy' people come to the campaigns because it is their only chance to see a doctor. Normally, the primary care health centers are overcrowded with sick patients, and check-ups are virtually non-existent. Additionally, many of the people in attendance of our HOP campaigns show the same signs and symptoms of disease, which can be reduced with basic health education and awareness! This is where HOP comes in, with our teams of eager and talented volunteers! 

We want to build a public health clinic, focused on prevention, promotion, and education of health! Rather than sending our volunteers to the health clinics and hospitals in Trujillo, we will send them to our own HOP clinic! This is a win-win situation, as the volunteers will get to work directly with patients every single day, and patients will get the opportunity to have more awareness of their own health status and how to care better for their health. During volunteer sessions, we will have campaigns every day that will consist of various screenings and educational workshops. These campaigns will vary, and will cover everything from sanitation, hygiene, oral health, female care, sexual and reproductive health, nutrition, pregnancy care, communicable and noncommunicable disease risk factors, stress reduction, occupational health and environmental care. Patients will be able to avoid long lines while being able to get fast check-ups and lovely, free care from our volunteers. Most screenings can be done with minimal training from the volunteers: such as checking weight, blood pressure, glucose levels, testing for anemia, and taking individual clinical histories. Many doctors and nurses in Trujillo have expressed excitement about this new project, and have offered their help to attend as guest doctors in our larger campaigns; including pediatricians, gynecologists, chiropractors, physical therapists, and ultrasound technicians! 

In the past 3 years, we have impacted over 2,000 people with our health campaigns and other HOP activities!




Our fundraising needs

Obviously, to start such a large project is hard, yet possible. With our current professional relationships in Trujillo, and our successful volunteer programs throughout the past three years, we have realized that creating our own public health clinic is 100% achievable! We have everything we need to have a successful clinic: volunteers, expertise, community buy-in, yet we lack arguably the most important link in the chain: Funding! This is where YOU come in! We need your help now more than ever, especially now in the beginning with land purchasing, clinic construction and design: 3 tremendous costs that greatly exceed our small nonprofit savings account. We project that these costs plus the extra administrative costs of starting the project will cost about $50,000. We have faith, though, that with proper fundraising techniques and grant applications in both USA and Peru, the money will come and our clinic will be a success!

Hands on Peru has survived and flourished in the past 3 years on word of mouth and the wonderful efforts of our volunteers. With only 4% of our income coming from private donations, we have managed to spend at least 13% of all of our money on donations for the community! We expect that if we can increase the percentage of donations received, we will be able to multiply that in the community in which we work, and make an even larger and lasting positive impact in population health in Trujillo, Peru!
