Empower Pine Ridge Native Youth

Nothing is more tragic than losing a child. The suicide rate for indigenous youth between ages 10-24 is double that of non-indigenous youth. Very few people outside of the reservations are aware of that, but now you are. Please help us prevent youth suicide on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation by empowering native youth today.
Honor the Drums is a 501c3 organization that is working to prevent youth suicide on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Research has shown that loss of cultural identity is a contributing factor of indigenous suicide. Honor the Drums is working with existing community organizations to develop an art therapy programs for children ages 10-18 that will offer art, music, photography and writing combined with native culture, folklore and history. We are working to expand and provide services year round by 2017, develop an equine therapy program and purchase a van so we can take our program to those most in need. These vital programs are not available due to lack of funding but we can provide them. By reinforcing the values, strength, and beauty of their own culture, history, and community, combined with modern art therapy, we hope to increase coping skills, encourage self-reliance, promote healing from trauma, and improve self-esteem in the youth of Pine Ridge.
The programs will be staffed by Pine Ridge residents and college students who travel to the reservation as volunteers. Both residents and student volunteers will experience a true cultural exchange during their time on the reservation. By growing the number of people who are aware of the issues, we will be able to amplify the voices of those who need to be heard.
My name is Karen Posner and I am president of Honor the Drums. After my first visit to Pine Ridge, I was so moved by the beauty of the people, the land and the culture, that I knew I had to do something. I just did not know at the time that I would soon grow to love Pine Ridge as much as the peope who live there. As a mother I cannot imagine the pain of losing a child and I would like to help make sure others don't experience that pain. Any donation is appreciated and just may help save the life of a child!
