Honoring the Life of Daniel Edward Mares

As the mother of Courtney and Andrew, I am devastated by the loss of their father.  I am helping them when they will let me, but the kids are stepping up and handling all of the arrangements on their own. His passing was sudden and shocking. On top of the loss, the kids had to search his house for some sort of direction, but found no will, no life insurance and no access to any of his accounts or information. Dan and I's kids are only 23 and 21 and still trying to get through school and on to their adult feet. He was so very proud of everything they have done so far and would not want his passing to set them back in any way. As their mother, I know the kids won't ask for financial help so I am doing it on their behalf.

Below is what the kids posted to Facebook expressing their feelings about their dad passing away on Saturday, December 22nd, 2018 while skiing at Keystone.

We appreciate anything anyone is willing to offer the kids so that they can honor their dad the way they think he would have wanted.

Thank you in advance,
Kim Barnes Mares Johnson

To our Dad’s friends and family, from Andrew and I.

One of our dad’s favorite things to do is go skiing, and we might be biased, but he loved going with Andrew and I. Yesterday, December 22nd, we were up at Keystone enjoying the fresh snow and he had the biggest smile on his face all day. You can see it in the picture we took yesterday on the chair lift. Unfortunately, we were on the back side of the mountain when he collapsed. Bystanders found him and started CPR. Andrew and I had been ahead of him, and were waiting at the bottom with no idea. Keystone Ski Patrol took over CPR with ACLS protocol and transported him to the on site hospital. Despite the extensive care of Ski Patrol and the medical staff at St. Anthony’s Keystone Medical Clinic, our dad passed away doing what he loved most, with who he loved most.

Andrew and I would like to thank those that have already reached out. We also would like to thank everyone that helped try to save our dad and the former strangers that helped us survive yesterday.

We are still trying to process our dad being gone in the blink of an eye, it still feels like we are dreaming. We are currently working on making decisions as to how we are going to honor his life. He made his own decision to be an organ donor, and will save and help many people through his donations.

We will post an update when arrangements are finalized. If anyone needs to reach out, feel free to do so. We are currently locked out of all of our dad’s gadgets. Anyone that knew him, knows his passwords are slightly ridiculous. If anyone knows any of his passwords, particularly to his phone, please help us by reaching out via Facebook Message to either Andrew or I.

We loved him dearly, and he will surely be missed. We couldn’t have asked for a better Dad, just for more time with him.
