HOMES for the HOMELESS

$2,536 of $10,000 goal

Dear all,

My name is Showly Nicholson and I'm a Junior at Harvard College dedicated to ending homelessness in Cambridge. Through working as a resource advocate at the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter, I've learned homelessness is a vicious cycle--one that takes more than a strong work ethic to escape. To get, and keep, a reliable job, a homeless person needs a permanent place to rest, bathe, wash clothes, and have three meals a day--necessities only those with a reliable job can comfortably afford. To fix this problem, I've created a plan.

With $2000, I can pay the security deposit and three months rent for a single room rental ($400/month utilities included), as well as provide the necessary clothes, food, and transportation for the homeless individual. At the same time, the client will have a full-time job and build their savings, so when the three months have passed they can comfortably afford their rent and other necessities. I have worked with the first candidate for a few months now, and come June 1st we hope to start the program. My goal is to save 5 people who are homeless because they can't keep their jobs, and if this works, I will create a non-profit organization that specializes in providing homes and work for the dedicated homeless.

Please contribute to this project by Donating and Sharing this page to people you think will care for the cause! Even $10, $5, or even $1 makes a difference, and 100% of the donations will go towards giving the homeless another chance at a fulfilling and self-sufficient life. With your help, I can make my life-long dream of helping the homeless a reality, and together, we can end the curable homelessness in Cambridge, one person at a time.

Even if you don't contribute, thank you sincerely for your time!

I have great news for you all. Tomorrow I will make the first payment for a hardworking homeless person to move into a home. After months of searching we have finally found a fitting and affordable place, and it would not have been possible without the your help!

Thank you, sincerely.

But this is only the beginning. There are more hardworking, upstanding, and driven homeless people out there who just need one last push to make it out of the vicious cycle of being homeless. My goal is to start by saving 5. After making it this far with the first client, I've learned what works, what doesn't work, and where difficulties may occur--and the next four are guaranteed to get easier and easier.

As some foresight, over winter break I will begin the process of starting an organization at Harvard that specializes in doing this work and more for the homeless. Tangible and positive change is the goal.

As always, I am incredibly grateful for your support and interest in this endeavor, and I hope these updates and the article in the Herald attest to the effective use of all donated funds.

After raising enough funds to afford the security deposit and rent for the first client, I searched fervently for affordable housing over the summer months. Despite meeting with many tenants and landlords from a variety of housing sites, I have had trouble finding a place that would be comfortable allowing a formerly homeless individual moving in, even while they have a reliable source of income. Currently, I am working with a very driven team of students at Harvard to maneuver around this small problem, and save the lives of these homeless people in need of help. Meanwhile, we are still raising funds!!

Thanks!
