Homeless Cooking

Homeless Cooking is a cookbook that is going to feature cheap and nutritious recipes that unsheltered homeless people can make as quickly and easily as possible with the limited resources available to them. It will also feature essential information including ways to cook, store food, and keep preparation sanitary while homeless.

Our organization will be distributing these books for free to interested homeless individuals in our area and will also be selling them to the general public to raise money to support our charitable mission to foster a community, and advocate, for those in need of shelter.

Homeless people, understandably, have a number of disadvantages when it comes to making their own food. They don’t have the luxury of being able to maintain a steady cooking environment, nor do they have assurance that they will be able to safely store any of the leftovers of what they make. Many homeless living in the woods don’t have access to ovens or microwaves, and the homeless living on the streets are unable to carry around bulky kitchen equipment. All will naturally have issues with converting their food budget into nutritious preparations.

To address all these issues, we’re ensuring that the recipes included in the book meet the following parameters:

-Use very cheap ingredients
-Are as nutritious as possible
-Use a minimal amount of varying ingredients per recipe
-Do not require an oven or microwave to prepare
-Do not take a very long time to cook
-Do not require a great deal of cooking equipment
-Are as preservable as possible

We may change these parameters slightly as we continue to solicit feedback from real homeless people but these are our starting guidelines.
