Hayden update: From Hayden's mom Heather. I hate asking for help, but since it's for Hayden, here goes: He has 4 upcoming surgeries. The first is a simple trach revision and bronchoscopy, requiring one night in hospital. The next is more intense: Phrenic Nerve Decompression, shoulder decompression, and Diaphragmatic pacer repair. This surgery will get him back on track weaning off the vent during the day (or longer!!) and maybe inch him toward his goal of functional arms. This surgery will be done in Los Angeles, which is where the closest specialist practices. We're either going to drive (not ideal) or fly but need a wheelchair van rental while in Los Angeles. The final two surgeries are intensive and a little scary: Scoliosis correction spinal surgery, and facial reconstruction. These will both be done in Seattle, but we face weeks of inpatient care. All of this is expensive, because while blessed with fabulous insurance, there is no coverage for hotels, travel expenses, etc. I'm humbly asking for help. We've looked into dipping into our 401k or even refinancing the house. But all that takes time, and for Hayden's health, we'd like to get started as soon as possible. Please share his story. Our boy has dreams of transferring to Cal Berkeley, then on to medical school. But he'd like to do it as "normal" as possible. Off the vent, no more trach, functional arms. Those have been his goals since the first day in rehab. Please help us strive to these goals!
