Hiding In Plain Sight Nonprofit Startup Funds

Hiding In Plain Sight is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advocacy, education, outreach, support and early intervention of all eating and emotional disorders. After a life long battle with various eating and emotional disorders, I founded Hiding In Plain Sight Inc. the nonprofit organization. Some of our co-founders are still in treatment. Some are women and men of color who had been told eating disorders were something only affluent white women experience. For me help was not easy to find during my struggles, nor did I see any one like me in treatment, neither in color or size.

Since its inception this year, during the great COVID 19 pandemic , Hiding In Plain Sight has struggled to bring information and awareness about body image issues, eating and emotional disorders to more than thousands of people over the internet and social media.

Hiding in Plain Sight harnesses the power of social media to change the narrative of curated perfection and artificial beauty by promoting a spirit of self-love, acceptance, and a body-positive ethos among all people, regardless of race, body type, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, income level, or any other factor. Our inclusive lifestyle community, founded by people in various stages of recovery from eating and emotional disorders, embraces overlooked people who are “hiding in plain sight.”

We are building a vibrant community that encourages members to truly love themselves and their beautiful essence.
Our nonprofit organization provides a range of resources like virtual and in-person workshops and discussions, art therapy, 1:1 coaching, and informational materials designed to educate and empower people who, for whatever reason, are not getting care for eating and emotional disorders. Our ultimate mission is to educate, advocate, and raise awareness about the many faces of eating disorders and how to recognize the symptoms, the connection with body image, and the role society and the media play while providing a safe space filled with kindred spirits ready to provide encouragement and support.

Traumatic events impact on people’s mental health. The fear of contagion and of the death of family members has created huge uncertainty. Isolation brings anxiety, sadness, anger and loneliness. Social distancing and ‘quarantine’ are against human nature. The negative emotional effects of “quarantine” are likely to be accentuated for many eating and emotional disorder sufferers who are already isolated both emotionally and physically. Impoverished interpersonal function will be more difficult to handle when severe “social distancing” has been in place. That is why we are eager to get our organization in place to create the awareness necessary and make a difference TODAY.

Our community of healing is sending a message loud and clear that one size does not fit all and each person should be evaluated and treated as an individual with a unique set of challenges and strengths. The process of healing and recovery is not linear or easy. Sometimes the journey is slow and rocky, moving at “sloth speed.” But together, we will get there.

If you’ve been hiding in plain sight, we want you to know that we see you and we want your voice to be heard.!

We are a new, small organization with few volunteers but our cause is mighty!
