Hidden Figures at the Garde

$2,085 of $7,000 goal

Raised by 33 people in 28 months
This fundraiser draws its inspiration from a 13 year old aspiring astronaut in Florida, Taylor Richardson , who wants to send more girls in her area to see the movie Hidden Figures and give them a copy of the book. Here in New London, Connecticut, we share that same desire.  We want to inspire our children, especially our girls, to pursue their dreams! We want to share the message that we are stronger together, and that there are no limits to what we can achieve!

We are fundraising to bring 200 well deserving New London Public School students to an afternoon private viewing of Hidden Figures at our very own Garde Arts Theatre, in New London, CT, on February 22, 2017.

In order to achieve this goal, we need your help! Funding for the arts have been significantly cut over the past several years, so as concerned citizens and mothers, we are coordinating efforts to bring this wonderful opportunity to our students. This is an important opportunity for our children to witness, not only an amazing part of our history, but the positive results of strength, hard work and determination.

Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to provide the following:

* Admission to a special viewing of Hidden Figures

* Refreshments (popcorn and a drink)

* An Inspiration bag that includes a copy of the Hidden Figures book

Please help us create a memorable and meaningful experience for our New London Public School Students!

“As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women, known as "human computers", we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history's greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes.” - Written by 20th Century Fox

As a high school math teacher, this is a must for all girls, especially those who "think" they can't do math.
