They Lost Their Parents. Help Them Attend College

Donation protected
Christopher Matthews is a freshman at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC. On October 15, 2018, cancer claimed Chris’s mother, seven years after the death of his father. Chris and his sister Techiera, a high school senior who plans to attend college starting in the fall, are now on their own. We are looking for financial support to ensure that Chris and Techiera, outstanding young people and academically gifted students, can achieve their dream of completing their college degrees. All donations will be used for their living expenses and college tuition over the next four years.

Chris and Techiera have endured repeated challenges and hardships during their young lives. In addition to losing both parents, they have also had to deal with the death of both sets of grandparents, two maternal aunts and an uncle, as well as a paternal aunt and uncle.

Their parents were hardworking people. Their father, a maintenance worker who also preached at their church in Godwin, North Carolina, and their mother, a nurse, always impressed upon their children the importance of education. While theirs was a family of modest means, Chris and Techiera’s parents encouraged them to work hard and always strive for success.

Chris has maintained good grades during his freshman year while working 45 to 55 hours each week. After his father died, Chris helped support his mother and sister by working two jobs. Now that his mother is gone, Chris’ responsibilities have increased.

Chris originally set out to play football for either Harvard, Yale, or Cornell University. Beginning with his freshman year at Cape Fear high school, Chris was the starting middle linebacker and a captain on the football team. His academic and athletic talents led him to be recruited to play football for Harvard, Yale, and Cornell. Prior to his senior season however, Chris broke his leg, causing him to miss his final football season. The schools withdrew their offers.

Chris changed plans and was accepted by North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Baylor, and Campbell Universities. He chose to attend Campbell University, in part, to be closer to his family in order to help support them. Chris says his parents always said, “Family comes first.”

While Chris is receiving financial support from Campbell University, and Techiera’s exceptional academic record will help her with college scholarships, they need support for living expenses while Techiera completes her senior year of high school, and to cover expenses while they both complete four years of college.

Please help Chris and Techiera achieve their dream of finishing college. They need our support.

Funds donated will be managed by a wealth and trust advisor who is also a friend of the Matthews family. All funds raised will be used to pay for their living expenses and their college tuition over the next four years.
