Herb Wong Needs Your Help

Donation protected
Herb Wong needs your help. He has terminal cancer and after two spinal-cord surgeries, several bouts of radiation therapy, and other medical treatments, his doctors have informed him that medical science cannot help him anymore. He doesn’t have much time left.

Herb has been placed on 24/7 home healthcare. The family members are taking care of half of this care when they are not at work. Herb needs your help to cover the other half of his 24/7 home care while his family is at work. As you may know, home healthcare is not covered by private health insurance or by Medicare. He needs home healthcare so that he can finish his several core projects that he is working on.

Herb gave freely what he taught and to whom he supervised, mentored, coached, provided support, etc. He seldom charged for his services. For the past ten years, he has worked for one employer at a university. Six months ago his employer put him on unpaid medical leave, and six month later, his resources, saving, reserves, etc. are gone.

All of you who have worked with Herb have mentioned how his work had touched your lives. Others of you may recognize the positive social changes that had an impact on your work, life, and community such as the following examples:

• Co-founder and transfer of the National Diversity Conference to the Society for Human Resources (SHRM) Diversity and Inclusion Conference and Exposition -- impact of diversity and inclusion in our workplace

• Co-author of Multicultural Law Enforcement: Strategies for Peacekeeping in Our Diverse Society (6th ed.) -- impact of police relationships on minority communities

• Professor for over 20 years in our community, state, and non-profit colleges and university in teaching and mentoring thousands of students in undergraduate and graduate psychology, leadership, human development, research, abnormal psychology, etc. -- impact of psychology on the students’ work and life

• Instructor for over 40 years in Asian martial arts (Karate, Gung Fu, etc.) and representation of the different styles locally, regionally, and nationally -- impact of the Asian martial arts on students’ health, healing, and well- being.

• Creator of the NIMH Staff College’s Developing and Administering Community Mental Health Services to Ethnic/Minority Community -- impact the accessibility of ethnic and minority people in mental health services.

• Founding Executive Director for the Richmond Area Multicultural Services (RAMS) Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center -- impact in providing mental health services in 17 languages in addition to English

• Vietnam-Era Veteran who received three meritorious promotions in the field (within his 16-mouth tour with the 30th Artillery Brigade (Air Defense) Okinawa along with the recommendation for the Army Commendation Medal) for his contributions in the tactical and strategical deployments in Vietnam -- impact in saving our soldiers’ lives on the ground

As you can see, Herb’s work has touched the lives of many. He wants to complete at least two projects before he goes: (1) a biography of one of his Asian martial art teachers (who developed the US Air Force Judo Program, and (2) Leadership for Today’s Diverse Society to continue his positive social change in our communities.

He will need $125,000 to ensure that Herb’s home healthcare services are covered as he completes his writing projects. Some of his prior students have already donated $7,000 directly to him to date.
