Henbane Zine - Smashing Patriarchy

Donation protected

Welcome back everyone!

We've returned from the EF! Rondy in Ohio. Henbane was a hit! We've been invited to more events and have been asked to print more copies. We need funding to meet the demand!

HENBANE IS TAKING OFF AND THE PEOPLE WANT MORE!

WHAT IS HENBANE MAGAZINE?

HENBANE a full page independently published annual magazine that focuses on women, non-binary, and people of all trans identities sharing stories, experiences and land based skills split more or less between personal narratives, poems, essays, and DIY articles.

The Henbane Collective and zine was inspired by Country Women, a 70’s feminist back-to-the-land magazine. We recognize the important contributions of those who preceded us. Our goal with this publication is to expand the concept and create a non-condescending, non-competitive way to share land-based skills, bringing together a widespread and diverse community.

WHO IS HENBANE?

Henbane contributors come from all parts of so-called North America. Currently the core collective of editors is small, but we would like to have more people involved in: social media, distribution, communications, art and design, and fundraising.

WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING?...

WE ARE FUNDRAISING TO UPLIFT THE VOICES OF WOMEN, NON-BINARY, AND TRANS PEOPLE WITH SKILLS...

Although the zine has primarily been distributed hand-to-hand with little to no internet presence, we've found the publication to gain a popularity that is hard to keep up with. Whether it's chopping wood, fixing cars, or herbal medicine, women and gender-nonconforming folks are often sidelined, silenced, and made to feel small in our society when it comes to making and doing things.  Henbane offers a platform for "not-men" to talk about and share skills and experiences with eachother.

WE ARE FUNDRAISING TO PRESENT AT THE EARTH FIRST! RENDEZVOUS JULY 2nd-9th 2018

In addition, The Earth First! Round River Rendezvous, an annual gathering of environmental activists, has personally asked Henbane to share the magazine and facilitate a workshop at their gathering in Ohio from July 2nd-July 9th 2018. There is a demand in the environmental activist community to create space for "not-men" to connect with each other as they connect with nature and land-based skills that move us towards independence from patriarchy and the rat race. Although the Rendezvous is giving Henbane a small stipend, we need more funds to cover the cost of sending three Henbane collective members to the Ohio Rendezvous, two of whom are people of color.

WE ARE FUNDRAISING TO PRINT AND DISTRIBUTE HENBANE BEYOND OUR IMMEDIATE COMMUNITY

We screen printed a small run  but need money to have a larger printing and distribution. We have big dreams to be a 501(c)3 publication with subscriptions and annual mailings, in addition to hosting skill shares and gathering by and for "not-men". The demand and community is there, but we need funds to keep up with our demand and build our infrastructure as an organization!

WHY DO WE MAKE HENBANE?...

TO RESIST CAPITALISM AND PATRIARCHY

Our interest in re-establishing a connection with nature is a form of resistance to the destructive systems of capitalism and patriarchy. We are committed to uplifting folks who identify as women, trans, non-binary, gender nonconforming, people of color, indigenous, queer, poor, fat, immigrants, undocumented, non-native english speakers, differently abled, neurodivergent, young, old, and others who are held down by the dominant culture. Gender and feminism are not static, and we understand that our collective idea of those concepts will continue to evolve.

WHERE CAN I GET A COPY OF HENBANE?

So far Henbane has primarily been passed hand to hand. We are sold at events and select stores in California and Oregon. We are still getting our footing with mass printing and distribution. With enough money raised we are looking forward to doing a larger printing, having an online store, and setting up annual subscriptions!
