Last call: support Yemen Pavilion

Let me introduce myself briefly to you. I am an anthropologist and I worked several years in various Yemeni cities between 1989 and 1999. From 2013 I resumed conducting short missions again in Yemen till the war broke out in March 2015.

Since a long time I am looking for an excellent opportunity to present Yemen in a positive way on the world stage as Yemen is a misrepresented country from various perspectives. The Biennale Architettura 2016 - the leading international platform for architecture in the world - offered the possibility to bring the rich and fascinating architectural heritage of Yemen under the spotlight as well as to draw the attention of the world to the current destruction of the Yemeni architectural heritage sites.

Seen the ongoing war in Yemen it was not easy to have Yemen participate but the Beautiful Yemen team in close cooperation with the Istituto Veneto per I Beni Culturali, succeeded to represent the Ministry of Culture in Yemen for the first time at the International Architecture Exhibition in Venice 2016. The contribution of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Yemen - to cover the cost of the hospitality fee of  the location of the Yemen Pavilion in the Arsenale - was the deciding factor to continue!

The National Pavilion of Yemen is modest but as one visitor rightly said: "the message is important": a statement that a small part of the world has not forgotten Yemen and its population that is going through a dire humanitarian situation since almost two years.

We are proud to show you an impression of the National pavilion of Yemen at la Biennale di Venezia. Media attention for the National pavilion of Yemen was generated in Europe, Yemen and New York!

Donations received amounted to € 13.335,09 as per 3-10-2016. Expense made amounted to € 23.948,38 as per 3-10-2016. The funds received were used to cover expense related to: the location of the Yemen Pavilion in the Arsenale, the website and part of the expense made by the Istituto Veneto Per I Beni Culturali (production and installation of the exhibition). All the work was done on a voluntary basis and the hours of the Istituto Veneto Per I Beni Culturali (IVBC) spent before and during the exhibition are borne by the IVBC. See financial statement for more detailed information.

As funds received did not cover all the expense a renewed targeted fundraising has been started. New donations received will be used to cover the remaining expense of the Istituto Veneto Per I Beni Culturali (production and installation of the exhibition).
