My mother, Divya Jain, has fought cancer over and over and over again. During this awful journey, she has kept things as private as possible, sparing others the sorrow of news of relapse and the anguish of what the outcome may be. "You are an inspiration" is what people tell her all the time. "You don't behave like you are sick." "You carry this with so much grace and joy." "Your attitude is amazing."
It started in 2002 in the left breast. Since then, the same cancer has come back in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016 and again this year in 2018. It has metastasized from the breast, to her brain and multiple places in her lungs. Standard methods of treatment are no longer an option, it is terminal. We don't know how long we have. Right now she is weak but mobile. Being bed ridden is the next step in the progression of the disease.
She always wanted to make difference, so chose careers that helped people in need. She worked with juvenile delinquents, people with disabilites, low income youth and single mothers. Due to the disease, she had to stop working in 2012 and was unable to return to work. Since then, medical care, transportation, lodging and meals have eroded funds. However, the biggest culprit is yet to come, home health care. Our goal is AT LEAST 6 months of 24hr home care with the expectation that there will be intermittent help from friends and family.
My mother is a strong, single parent. It's just my mom and me, I'm an only child and the rest of her immediate family still lives overseas. Therefore, I am starting this fundraiser to provide her peace of mind and allow her to be comfortable, enjoying life without financial burden.
This call for help is an outreach to those who believe everyone deserves quality and compassionate care.
