The Chicago Riots is a junior roller derby league (JRDA) that bonded together over the need to provide a safe, strong, nurturing environment for young skaters. We teach leadership, collaboration, confidence, and positive body image -- as well as hip checks and hockey stops. We identify as an all-girls league, but we also accept transgender and gender-nonconforming skaters.
Many of our skaters come to roller derby from other activities that weren't the right fit; others come to us after feeling like they don't fit anywhere at all. Our Riots are brave, caring, funny, and driven.
However, roller derby is not a cheap sport, and in many cases mom, dad, grandparents, advocates and friends just don't have the extra money to help a young skater get the necessary gear they need for a safe experience.
We have collected some used gear, generously donated by skaters throughout the Chicago area, but having enough kid-sized gear available has proven challenging -- especially since our leaue has grown to capacity, with over 40 skaters on wheels this seaon!
When one of our coaches recently reached out to find a pair of used loaner skates for one of our newest Riots, many friends from the derbyverse and beyond asked, "How can I help?"
We are overwhelmed by the support people want to offer our skaters, so we're setting up this fund for anyone who would like to help make roller derby possible for skaters who might not otherwise be able to afford it.
Here's how you can help: we welcome donations in any amount, and we are grateful for every penny. For an idea of what your donation will cover, or for suggestions of donation increments, here's a breakdown of the costs....
$15 mouth guard
$25 wrist guards
$40 elbow pads
$50 knee pads or a month of dues
$75 helmet or game jersey
$125 full protective gear package
$175 beginner-level skates
$400 dues for an entire year
We greatly appreciate any donation amount, and we will keep our donors updated on what we are able to do with your contributions. Anything above immediate needs (new skaters in need of gear and returning skaters who are outgrowing or wearing out their gear) will be set aside for our next batch of Riots, so we can make sure that no kid is prevented from joining roller derby for financial reasons.
Funds will go directly to the league via charity PayPal transfer and be spent keeping the team rolling, especially for skaters who cannot otherwise afford the expenses associated with roller derby.
