Community Dog Welfare Kopan (CDWK) is a small organisation in Payutar, on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal, run by a dedicated couple from New Zealand, Kate and Doug Clendon.

CDWK provides shelter, care and treatment for abused, neglected, abandoned, sick and injured dogs rescued from the streets, as well as organising education and treatment programs in local communities.

“I volunteered with CDWK in early February 2018. Kate and Doug know each dog so well and on such a personal level. It was really lovely to be able to be around such a beautiful establishment that has had so much love and time put into it for the rescued dogs. I can definitely recommend this place highly to anyone” - Jessica (Australian vet nurse volunteer, February 2018).

Currently, 73 dogs are being cared for by Kate and Doug at the CDWK centre, with help from their team of local staff and occassional volunteers from all over the world. Unfortunately, recent housing development, and sale of the land upon which the dogs were housed, has meant that all the dogs in the shelter have had to be relocated. Luckily, additional land was located nearby. Dog enclosures have now been built on this piece of land but it is just not large enough to accomodate all the dogs in CDWK's care.

With the assistance of a generous supporter, an additional, adjoining piece of land, with a rundown, local house on it, has been now been rented and fenced. CDWK is urgently seeking to raise enough funds to build internal dog enclosures on this new piece of land, and to make the ramshackle house functional. As the rainy season will begin in June, there is less than three months to complete the work so that all of the dogs have adequate shelter.

This project to develop the newly acquired land for the dogs will use existing materials and labour where possible. It will be implemented in four phases:
1. Erecting wire mesh fences with gates to make three enclosures- two for well dogs and one for ill and old dogs; plus provision of water for the site; and building a washroom for staff and visitors.
2. Turning the existing cow shed into a kitchen to cook the dog food; and creating a double-gated safety entrance area.
3. Renovating the existing house to create a treatment room and dispensary; office space; storeroom; and sleeping room for sick dogs, old dogs and young pups.
4. Construction of an additional 10 sleeping boxes for adult dogs.

The planned project is shown in the sketch below- proposed work is indicated in red.

This project is estimated to cost approximately 245,000 Nepalese ruppes ($2,374US or $3,030AUD). A budget is presented below (full calculations are available upon request).

Please help CDWK to complete the new dog enclosure and facilities so that they can continue to offer the current high standard of care to the vulnerable dogs living in their centre.
