Madelyn is my daughter-in-law, my youngest son's wife. She has been dealing with cancer for several years. She was diagnosed in 2009 with stage IV breast cancer, metastasized in 3 other places: the lung, the liver and the spine. Fortunately, the spots on the liver and the lung responded well to the chemo therapy and they were gone for some time . The breast cancer also responded well to chemo and a lumpectomy was performed in 2011. Unfortunately, the spine cancer was very stubborn and had to have radiation. The radiation appeared to have worked well; however, there were still spots of cancer in her spine that were inactive. Recently, a scan showed a recurrence of the activity, in a totally new place, the pelvic area. They did radiation on this area.
Madelyn spent most of November in the hospital and has been in and out for years. They now say the cancer returned in her lung and now on a rib.
In the midst of all this, she required surgery for 2 herniated discs.
As you can imagine, this multi-year journey has left them with an incredible amount of debt. Even with excellent insurance, there are many medical charges that are not covered which have to be paid. Additionally, as they struggle to pay these medical bills, their other bills are affected and their once good credit is now in ruins. During this time, they have faced the possibility of losing their home, in addition to lots of other stresses caused by the lack of the ability to pay important bills.
In December of 2016, the day they returned home from a hospital stay, they were informed their home was foreclosed and had been sold. They were given until the end of the month to move out.
Madelyn has been unable to work since the onset of her disease, which of course, has cut their income significantly. She also is near immobile due to pain and cannot help with the move. Fortunately, family and friends are pitching in to help, but financial help is desperately needed as Mike has had to take time off work unpaid and they need money to get back medical bills paid, rent on their apartment, and get the stress of finances off their backs.
