My name is Katy, I'm 22 years old, and the adorable puppy in the picture is named Marlee.
About 4 months ago one of my friends found Marlee abandoned in a store parking lot, lost and alone, not even two months old. Without anyone lined up to adopt her, she brought her to live with me. My boyfriend and I started caring for her and instantly fell in love, though we hadn't planned on keeping her. Several people wanted to adopt her but for whatever reason it never worked out and we were continually looking. Many did not have jobs that could support or work around a new puppy, were in the process of moving, or did not live somewhere that allowed pets at all.
After a couple of months Marlee had established routines living with us. She was house trained, listened well, ate and played a lot, she had a family member's St. Bernard puppy for a best friend, and had even worked through the separation anxiety she originally had when brought to us. After so much time moving her again could have caused her more stress and issues and undone all the progress she had made. And, we loved her. So we made it work. We rearranged schedules so that one of us worked in the daytime and one at night, and we typically had different days off, to ensure she had routines. Since the day she came into our lives it has been our goal to give her the best home anyone could ask for.
She has never missed a veterinary appointment, is current on all of her vaccines and check ups, and has been spayed and microchipped. We knew with any type of animal there would be unexpected costs and risks, but we weren't prepared for Marlee to be diagnosed with a very rare case of symmetrical juvenile cataracts. While we know nothing of her lineage, it is believed that Marlee was born with this condition, and that her eyesight has been rapidly deteriorating since birth, and now at barely six months she has full cataracts and is clinically blind in both eyes.
Marlee has seen many doctors about her condition and the only solution for her to regain sight is to undergo a cataract surgery. The cost of this surgery is $6000. With this surgery, a veterinary opthalmologist will cut into her lens, remove it, remove the cataracts, and replace her lenses with plastic ones. The procedure will then be followed up with several months of post-operative treatments and medication. It has a 95% success rate and she is a wonderful candidate. This will allow this otherwise entirely healthy puppy to live the rest of her life with sight.
Without this surgery, her condition will worsen. It will affect more than her vision. The longer time goes, her eyes will become like white marbles as her retinas will degenerate and detach, and she has a likelihood of developing glaucoma-a condition of the eyes where even being awake is unbearable.
If she can't receive her final tests and treatments within the next couple months, she may lose her chance altogether. Once her eyes have deteriorated past a certain point she is no longer a candidate for surgery.

The operation can be performed at the Las Vegas Veterinary Specialty Center, on W. Tropicana, where Marlee is currently a patient.
