Lhoumar's Kidney Dialysis

The Story...

On December 28, 2017 during a regular checkup with his doctor, Lhoumar at age 33, had dangerously high blood pressure, which prompted the doctor to draw blood lab work to find out why. The results revealed he was in stage 5 Kidney Failure.

Those who do not know, Stage 5 is the final stage of the failing kidney to perform.  In stage 5 the kidney begins or has already totally shut down and is no longer working to purify the bodies blood.  There are only 2 things that will keep a person alive in stage 5 kidney failure;  one is a kidney transplant and the second is to be placed on dialysis, a process that pumps the bad blood through a machine, filters it then pumps the clean blood back into the body.

A Kidney transplant can take a long time. From months to years, to never, if the right matching donor is not found.  Dialysis is the alternative until such a donor is found.

Lhoumar is currently on Dialysis at a clinic here in Albany Oregon.  He must go for dialysis treatments every other day.  The treatments last 4 hours each time.  The cost for the treatment is approximately $1000.00 each, or $12,000.00 a month.

He is in the process of getting approved to be able to take his dialysis at home using a portable dialysis machine.  The home dialysis treatment is less expensive but must be done daily for 8-10 hours 7 days a week. Most people do these treatments while they are sleeping.   Then they are able to have a “normal” life during the day.

Prior to his stage 5 kidney failure discovery,  Lhourmar was working a full-time job as a Resident Nursing Assistant in an assisted living facility. As a Nursing graduate from the Philippines, he had plans get his Nursing License and to pursue his nursing career in the United States.  Now, his working hours are limited and he has restrictions as to what he is physically able to do.

We have learned that Medicare will pay the medical expenses for people who have been diagnosed with a Chronic Kidney Disease.   However, Lhoumar does not qualify for any Medicare assistance because he is a Legal Resident of the United States from the Philippines, but not yet a US Citizen.   He must wait 5 years (4 more) before he can apply for US Citizenship.

How You Can Help...

Lhoumar has medical insurance through his employer with a $5000 yearly deductible of which he has not yet been able to pay.  Other expenses include $10-$20 co-pay on each prescription medication, transportation to and from the dialysis treatment center and other medical appointments.  Special Renal Dialysis diet meals.  Upcoming surgery to place the permanent tubing for Dialysis.  Follow up doctor visits, lab tests.  And a very expensive Kidney Transplant Operation.

Lhoumar is doing what he can, but he is limited with his restricted conditions. Even working full time would never begin to pay for the cost of the dialysis treatments.  But without them, he will not survive.
