Help Kaleb Fight Bone Cancer

Kaleb DelaCruz is a 17 year old junior at Midwood High School in Brooklyn. In early April 2018 doctors found a malignant tumor in his hip. After a biopsy he was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma a rare form of bone and soft tissue cancer. Kaleb is an excellent student and working hard to maintain his grades from the hospital. His chemotherapy started in late April, the same week he was also supposed to take the SAT. Kaleb’s doctors anticipate that he will have chemotherapy for the next year during which he will spend 50% of his time in the hospital. He will more than likely not be able to attend school at all during the next year.
Like so many people in Kaleb’s community I want to help him and his family, specifically to raise money to pay for the countless expenses that they will endure in the next year that Medicaid will not pay for. In particular they will need to have reliable transportation from their home in Brooklyn to the hospital in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Medicaid pays for transportation but it has to be set up in advance. Because Kaleb became sick so quickly it will take time for this to be setup. Medicaid transportation will not pay for Kaleb’s parents to go back and forth to the hospital if they are traveling there without him. His father is spending all his time with Kaleb in the hospital while his mother has to take two extra subway trips to drop off his younger brothers at school and then go to the hospital and come back to pick the boys up.
When Kaleb started Middle School he set a goal for himself to have perfect attendance. As you can imagine he was devastated to miss so many days of school in the past weeks and his teachers were surprised by his absence. He was particularly upset to miss the SAT. He volunteers at his church and would like to work in the medical profession. Kaleb faces a long and challenging journey ahead to realize his dreams. I hope that this fund can make the life of the entire DelaCruz family easier and to help provide Kaleb with the resources he needs to reach his chemo appointments and continue to prepare for his future.
