Helping PAW is dedicated to ending pet overpopulation through education of the public and by providing high volume, high quality, targeted, affordable sterilization services of unowned and companion animals and to subsidize care for animals whose owners are on government assistance.

Our mission: To provide low cost sterilization and wellness care as a means to reduce the number of homeless, abandoned, and feral animal populations. To edify the public on the importance of sterilization, basic pet care, humane treatment of animals and its benefits to animals and society.

I am the founder and director of this organization and have volunteered my time since its inception. I am completely devoted and determined to have this great program continue to achieve and grow.

Helping PAW relies on income from the work that we do as well as the generosity of donors like yourselves to help us succeed. Any donations to help us continue to thrive and serve our community would be greatly appreciated.

Please consider Helping PAW as a charity you would like to donate to this giving season. All donations are tax deductible and you will receive a receipt for your donation as well as the great feeling that you have helped a fabulous cause.

Please read the attached letter for an update on where we are today and our goals for the near future. We cannot succeed without your generosity. Thank you so much for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Dear Friends of Helping Promote Animal Welfare:

Helping Promote Animal Welfare (Helping PAW) was created to provide low cost spay and neuter service for cats and dogs on Long Island and surrounding areas.  Helping PAW is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt Public Charity.

Our mission statement:

Helping PAW is dedicated to ending pet overpopulation through education of the public and by providing high volume, high quality, targeted, affordable sterilization services of unowned and companion animals and to subsidize care for animals whose owners are on government assistance.

Helping PAW has had the privilege of performing excellent work for the Long Island community since 2009. Since our inception, we have given educational programs as well as performed thousands of vaccinations, spays, neuters and related services to achieve our mission.  All surgeries are performed in a spacious fully equipped mobile veterinary clinic. The clinic standards exceed those of The Association of Shelter Veterinarians veterinary medical care guidelines for spay-neuter programs, published in JAVMA in 2008. (74 Vet Med Today: Special Report JAVMA, Vol 233, No. 1, July 1, 2008.

Some of the communities that have counted on us include Brentwood Union Free School District, Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter (feral cat program), Town of Babylon, Feral cat groups in Riverhead, Pet Peeves rabies clinics, Town of Huntington spay/neuter clinics, Great Neck group: HUG (Humane Urban Group), PetCo and many others. Our private clinics aid the public and are sought after and recommended for excellent low cost care and further discounts for those on government assistance.

Our clinics are currently held on a 40 foot recreational vehicle that was designed as a vacation toy hauler and is pulled by a Chevy 450 diesel truck. The truck pulls the separate RV. The RV was manufactured in approximately 2003. When obtained it was in excellent shape, however, it is not a vehicle that is meant to be used as often as we have used it in the past 9 years.  It has sustained severe water damage, rotting internal wood walls, problems with the generator, full brake replacement and more.  Many repairs to the trailer and the truck have been done to repair worn parts and maintain safety. It is no longer practical to invest in this unit. (see images of it in its original state on our website: www.helping-paw.org.

The way the RV is designed, it is not practical or possible to work in extreme weather conditions, hot or cold. It is unsafe to drive in the snow and the surgical area is tin (the garage) and is not climate controlled.

More importantly, towing a 40 foot RV with a very large diesel truck is extremely dangerous. The learning curve is very steep and teaching someone else to drive it and handle potential problems is too much of a liability. It is nothing like driving a car, or a one piece vehicle. Currently, Dr. Levitan is the only person who is able to drive the vehicle, which greatly limits our ability to serve the community on a large scale.

Recently we have had the good fortune of locating an immaculately maintained 2005 Diesel pusher Dutch Star Class A motor home that will suit all of our needs and is built for high usage. It is a safe and sturdy motor home that can be driven easily and safely by anyone who passes a safety driving course. It is a custom made RV that has every safety feature, a very strong diesel generator, heat and cooling and excellent insulation. It has been inspected and cared for semi-annually and is currently used by an 80 year old woman who drives the unit herself.

The unit is a 40 foot 2005 Newmar Dutch Star 4015 S Class A RV. The price is $85,000 USD.

There will not be NY sales tax, however, there will be costs for insurance, unit alterations inside to meet our needs, as well as a wrap on the outside to promote it. We estimate that additional cost to be approximately $12,000 USD.

I am working with Signature Bank to get a loan for $86,000 to cover the unit at this time. Helping PAW has put down a $10,000 deposit. Dr. Levitan and Peace Love Pets are the guarantors.

Helping PAW believes this is the right decision to make on behalf of our organization. Everything about it makes sense. Most importantly, it will allow us the ability to provide much more service to the community in a safe, sturdy, easily drivable unit.

Helping PAW will continue to function as long as we can in the current vehicle to continue to raise money and serve the community. We are hoping that with additional help, we will be able to cover the debt of the new vehicle as soon as possible, and look forward to using it for our excellent cause.

Historically:

Helping- PAW has no full time paid employees.
Doctors, technicians and assistants are paid for their time.
Scheduling and planning are done by a doctor.
From 2010-2015 an average of 560 spays or neuters a year with limited access (2 drivers).  Thousands of vaccines and ancillary therapies have been done at the same time.
From 2015-2017 only and average of 327 spays or neuters due to limited access ( driver) but many hundreds of vaccines and ancillary therapies have been done at the same time.
We have done close to 4000 spays and neuters and over 8,000 vaccines and other ancillary services.
With this new vehicle, we can easily double those numbers annually.

Helping PAW relies completely on payment for our services and donations to support it. It is a very low maintenance business with few outside expenses. It is modestly profitable and has worked well for the past 9 years. We are seeking donations to help pay for the new unit, which will be for the good of many pets, feral animals, low income owners and the general public.

Any help you can offer in the form of a donation would be much appreciated. Donations may be mailed to the below address or made on line through our web site.

Sincerely,

Diane M. Levitan, VMD, Diplomate ACVIM (small animal), Director
