Helping an atheist mom in Michigan

This is a first for me. I have a friend in the Michigan atheist/humanist community who is in dire need of help, but she feels too embarrassed and humiliated by the ordeal she has been through to ask for help. She's afraid people will look down on her for it. I assured her that there are very generous and caring people in this community here in Michigan who won't look down on her but will be eager to help because our humanist principles tell us that we should.  But I told her I would put up this fundraising campaign to help and would not reveal her identity.  I hope you all will help me show her I was right. Let me tell her story.

She is the mother of an adorable young boy and she just left a long-term relationship with a man who was physically and emotionally abusive. They are now sleeping on a friend's couch. She is also facing a serious health crisis that we hope will be fixed by a medical procedure in a few weeks. Until then, and until she is fully recovered, she is unable to get a job. She actually has a job waiting for her once she's able to do it, but that will take some time.  Until then, she really needs some help for simple things like gas to get her son to school and go to medical appointments.

She has applied for help, but she lives in a county with limited resources and even if she qualifies for every bit of help she's applied for, it won't be enough. She should get food stamps soon, at least. And once she's back to work, she plans to get a small apartment for her and her son.

Humanism is, in part, the belief that no god or gods are going to help us, that it's up to us to help one another in times of need. We truly are are brothers' keeper, and our sisters' too. When we are in need, others pick us up and help us; in return, we do the same for them and others. We pay it forward as best we can. I have given a talk all over the country about the need to put our humanism into action, not just leave it as a list of ideals or a painting on a wall. This is an opportunity to do exactly that, to help a woman who has been abused, and her young child as well. So many women are trapped into abusive situations because they don't have the resources to leave. This woman summoned up the courage to leave and needs our help. I hope you'll help me show her that the Michigan atheist and humanist community is generous and caring and genuinely committed to the idea that we must take care of one another in times of trouble.

Thank you to all who will donate. I will make sure that every dollar donated, minus the small fee that the site charges, goes to help her and her son.

A message to everyone who donated from my friend:

When Ed suggested a gofundme for my child and I, I thought it unlikely to work, but honestly, a mother has to swallow her pride for her children- to do what needs to be done, to ask for help when it’s needed.

The situation we are in was due to a very long-term, toxic relationship with my son’s father. He grew very abusive over time, and sometimes, you don’t realize that you’re in a cage until the walls are already secured.

My son and I have managed to leave, discarding most of our belongings in the process. We are currently sleeping in my friend’s living room, staying with her and her 2 young daughters. I couldn’t be more grateful for the help she’s giving us.

I’ve been seeking assistance until my medical problems are resolved, within approximately 2 months, and I’m looking forward to starting a waitressing job in the local community.

I’m determined to find a way to make things stable and healthy and yes, happy for my little guy. He deserves the world. I want him to have the brightest future and grow into the best him possible.
So many of you have been able to help us. You’ve cared enough about us to contribute, even though we are nameless and faceless to you. That really says so much about the atheist/humanist community. I count myself honored to stand amongst your ranks. I can’t possibly express how grateful we are, and how far this money will go for us. I’d have truly been honored to have received a $20 gift card for gas. The amount you have raised for us is staggering. And the timing is perfect. My friend’s mechanic boyfriend took a look at my vehicle last night and what I’d thought was just a fuel pump is actually my motor. My car is old, but it got me to the appointments which are integral in improving my quality of life. I’m now running on 5 cylinders and I was told it isn’t worth fixing, at this point. So with this money, I can afford to buy a used car and transfer my plate and everything over and I’ll still have enough to put gas in the tank for a long while.

I just want to thank you and tell you all that I will never forget what the atheist/humanist community has done for us. I have been teaching my boy that volunteering, that improving the world for even just 1 person is the greatest gift we can give. Clearly, with you, I’m singing to the choir. Thank you all so much. You’ve managed to bring me to tears with your generosity.

First of all, thank you so, so much to those who have donated. I didn't think we'd come anywhere close to the goal, especially without giving a name or photographs of the person who needs the help. But as usual, you folks came through. The timing could not be better. Today she picked her son up from school and the fuel pump on her car went out. She got it to a mechanic, but it's a 20 year old car with 300,000 miles on it and he told her it's really not worth trying to fix. So I've upped the goal of this campaign to $3500 and hope we can get her an extra $1000 so she can put that toward a car that runs. She has to drive her son to school every day and go to many medical appointments every week, so this is critically important. Thanks again for your incredibly generosity, everyone.
