Empowering latin american students

Hi, I am Clarissa Rios, a Molecular Biologist, a UN Women global champion for women's economic empowerment and also the Director of Ekpapalek, a project that seeks to empower latin american students.

Perhaps because I come from Peru I feel very connected and responsible with the social issues happening in the so called "Developing countries". The biggest challenge I had to overcome was to find a solution for having few resources (money) for pursuing my studies and dreams of professional development. I come from a low-income family, so me and my parents made a lot of sacrifices so I could have a proper education.

I worked hard at university so I could win a scholarship to go to Finland as an exchange student. Later, I decided I wanted to study in the prestigious university Karolinska Institute in Sweden. So in order to achieved my dream; I worked cleaning ships and houses, collecting glasses, teaching Spanish, and babysitting so I could pay for my living expenses while studying. I overcame my initial lack of opportunities by empowering myself through education and by working hard and being persistent on my goals. Resilience, good attitude and passion for the things I did helped me a lot on my journey.

Although I could defeat this problem, that is not the case for millions of girls and boys in Peru. Actually, the lack of resources (money) and opportunities for professional development is still a big problem in the whole Latinamerica. So, in order to find a solution to this problem, last year I started a non-profit called Ekpapalek (www.ekpapalek.com).

Ekpapalek's mission is to empower Latin students and promote social and economic development of Latin American countries. Ekpapalek provides opportunities for professional development through three programs. All our programs are accessed freely by any student who needs to boost their academic career. We are the only organization that provides Latin students connections with overseas hosts that can host them for free while doing an internship. Also we connect them with professional experts from around the world who are willing to support them through our mentoring program. Finally, Ekpapalek also seeks to empower women by rewriting the role model for women in Latin American societies. We bring talks and workshops about women's economic empowerment. Ekpapalek believes in the academic and professional potential of Latin students and therefore invests in developing these free programs that can contribute to their professional development. Together we can create a world where Latinos are also known for their excellent academic skills and become successful professionals!

We have a website (www.ekpapalek.com) but we need to improve it so we can make our programs more user friendly. We also need some funding for improving and for continue keeping our programs for free for all students in latinamerica. Therefore,  I decided to do something that I really hate (running) in order to generate some fundings for Ekpapalek :D. So at the end of October I will be running a sport event in Brisbane. I will be posting some videos about it :D!

With your support we would be able to do the following:

1. Register Ekpapalek in Peru: Around 400 dollars (including legal advice). Ekpapalek has received press attention around the world (such as Empower Women (UN Women), World Pulse, Ananke, ...), and we need legal recognition because it helps us grow and increase our influence in Latin America and beyond.

2. Making website (www.ekpapalek.com) more user-friendly: Web developer at 50 dollars per hour (total of 10 000 dollars). Funds will help enhance our site and how our students can best access our resources. Ekpapalek provides opportunities for professional development through three programs. All our programs are accessed freely by any student who needs to boost their academic career.

3. Reach more students in Latin America: Spanish-language marketing services at 40 dollars per hour (total of 120 dollars), including print and online channels.

4. Transportation for mentors to/from Huacho to Lima for August 2016: 15 dollars each trip (includes only transport), total 60 dollars.

5. Certificates for 80 students that participate in our women's empowerment talks: 0.6$ per person (total of 50 dollars). Ekpapalek also seeks to empower women by rewriting the role model for women in Latin America. We bring talks and workshops about women's economic empowerment.

6. Pull up banner in Spanish (45 dollars) because nearly all of our students are Spanish-speakers.

For this campaign I set the goal for 1500 $ but the more we receive the more we can do to create more programs that empower latins. Your help will mean a lot for so many latin american students that need more opportunities for developing professionally. You will be contributing directly to boosting their academic development but also the social and economical development of latin countries. Education, innovation, technology and social responsability are our main goals!
