Four years ago, 27 year old Kara Murdock’s arm was amputated below the elbow due to a blood clot. Within 3 years, Kara Murdock had 15 surgeries, had multiple episodes of septicemia along with a heart valve infection and after receiving her third pacemaker, Kara developed reduced blood flow as a complication and is in need of two stints in her left arm to increase blood flow in her left arm and Kara is currently at very high risk to lose her remaining left arm.
One of Kara’s most urgent needs is dental surgery to treat numerous tooth loss and decay, which is a side effect of the pain management from her amputation and 15 surgeries. It is critical that this surgery take place as soon as possible to prevent life-threatening infections. Kara’s continual dental infections have caused a heart valve infection and additional dental infections increase the potential for replacement of Kara’s heart valve. Kara has also recently been diagnosed with 4 bulging disks which are pressing on the nerves in her back causing chronic pain.
On February 1, 2018, Delegate Danica Roem introduced HB 1478 Health insurance; coverage for prosthetic devices, on behalf of other amputees and Kara, Danica Roem’s friend for more than 14 years and constituent. Unfortunately, Delegate Danica Roem’s legislation was defeated 5-3 by the Republicans.
Prior to Kara’s amputation, Kara was a Paramedic and Professional Dog Groomer, but due to her amputation, she is no longer qualified to fulfill the requirements of her former careers. Kara’s medical bills have skyrocketed to over $250,000.
Kara does not have insurance, is currently unemployed, Kara is receiving SNAP (food stamps), has recently applied for Medicaid and SSDI through the Social Security Administration.

At this time Kara only has 13 teeth left and many are broken and fractured. This continually causes pain when eating and drinking. The remaining teeth opens Kara up for a second heart valve infection that is potentially life threatening.
