Help Zalika with Surgery and the PhD

Donation protected
I am a doctoral student in African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, whose research interrogates Black women and femme’s sexual shaming, visual culture, deviance, abjection, haunting, flesh, and pleasure through mediums of Afrofuturism , Black queer theory, horror and surrealism, while speculating the futurity of a Black sexual politics. I am also a multidisciplinary performance artist and organizing member of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement.

In November 2018, I found a lump below my abdomen. In January 2019, through ultrasound, it was determined I have a condition known as hydrocele canal of nuck. It creates a hole and space internally within the abdomen that fills with fluid. The fluid traveled through a canal and formed a cyst. It is painful and has grown to the extent where it causes extreme lower back pain and pain in my right leg. A few surgical options were suggested to me, but I believed I could hold out from surgery longer.

As this has taken place, I am currently writing a three part qualifying exam that I must defend Fall semester. Additionally, I must write a dissertation prospectus, that will also need to be defended in the Fall. This summer, I am to complete the written exam by August.

May 29th, I had to go to yhe emergency room because of all of the pain. I was told to schedule an appointment for consultation regarding surgery. With every hospital visit, there is a bill and definitely will be bills that are associated with the surgery. However, I am blessed to have student health insurance. As a student, I do not make much money. I have no clue how much this will cost.

Recently, on top of this surgery liquid spilled on my laptop. It is completely dead.

This is really hard for me to ask, but if you are able to donate or share this, please help me get back to good health and help me prepare for and complete my qualifying exams. I promise that everything that I do will be for the liberation of Black people, particularly Black women and queer people, but I need your help to do that.

Thank you for all of your support,
