What Has Happened

Mark Lewis is my brother-in-law, a husband and father of two, the breadwinner for his family, and the most gentle and loving man you could ever meet.

He was diagnosed with ‘colitis’ a few months ago, but his symptoms continued to worsen. He could not hold down food and he lost 40 pounds in the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas of 2018. After many rounds of doctor visits, we have finally discovered the source of the issue, and it is so terrifying.

Mark has Stage 4 colon cancer that has spread to his brain and liver.

We are going to fight this, but it has come as a major shock to my sister and Mark and the whole family.

We Need Your Help

Mark is continuing to try and work, but with the cancer in his brain and his available treatment options, money may not be coming in while he is in recovery.

Please donate whatever you can. If we hit our goal, at the very least the family will have a year’s worth of living expenses covered, which would be an incredible comfort to them.

EDIT: The original goal of $30k for a year's worth of living expenses was hit in 24 hours! Per the request of donors, we are upping the goal to begin to tackle medical expenses as well. You are truly changing a family's life for the better with your donations. A breakdown of money management will be included asap, as we get a treatment plan for Mark.

Meet Mark

If you don’t know Mark personally, I can only say that he is the very best of men. He walked into Ella’s life when she was a struggling single mother of a brand new baby girl and he has been both a father and provider. Sky has known him since she could form memories, he formally adopted her and she is a complete daddy’s girl.

He is Ella’s soulmate, the love of her life.

And he is the father of baby Sol, their little miracle.

We believe in miracles! This is the nightmare surprise that we all worry about, and it is so horrible that it has happened to this sweet sweet family and the best, most upstanding man I know. We are putting all our faith and love into finding help and hope and getting through this!

Mark passed away at 7:19 am on Saturday of February 23rd, 2019. Things have happened quickly this past month and I should have given you all an update earlier than this; I kept waiting for good news.

He had Ella by his side for every single day in the hospital, and he fought so hard to be here on this earth with his wife and children. We are all devastated. His funeral was yesterday.

Please pray for his wife, his 10 year old daughter, and his 2 year old son. We all love them so much, and it hurts to see them mourn.

Now the work begins of honoring his memory and legacy, and preserving stories of him for his children, so they get to see their daddy whenever they want, even if it is through other people.

Thank you to every single person who has contacted the family, prayed, sent food, or donated here. It carried us through dark times and gave us hope. It makes this first year as a widow a little easier for Ella.

Thinking of you all <3

- Maggie (Ella's sister)

Hi all! I’m hanging here with Mark at the hospital. I’m typing this directly:

“Thank you so much for the outpour of prayers and love, sorry I’m not able to get back with everyone but I remember everyone. So overwhelming, I’ve even had a teacher reach out to me from the sixth grade.”

He’s looking so much better, he’s had a blood transfusion and his first round of chemo.

So many funds have been raised, and so many people have come forward to help! To quote Mark, he is just “humbled” and feeling so encouraged.

He showed me this list of gyms, they are coming together to donate proceeds toward Mark’s treatment, he just can’t believe it. Y’all are amazing!

GOOD NEWS: WE HAVE A TREATMENT PLAN!

It is a happy morning; the doctors took time so they could create a good battle strategy, and now we know how they are going to treat Mark! His pathology shows that he has small cell cancer. This is typically found in the lung but his cancer has originated in his colon, so the first point of attack is chemo for his colon and liver.

The doctors are hoping his brain cancer stays quiet while he goes thru this treatment; at the end of colon/liver chemo, the plan is to do radiation on his brain.

We are so close to 50k!!! I wish I could hug every one of you!!!

My mother has been with Ella & Mark at the hospital every day so I’m going to leave you all with her words, in this update she posted to facebook this morning:

Jan 16: Wednesday. Hospitals are strange places. There are battles of different kinds going on in every room. Across the hall there is a woman yelling, “I don’t belong here”. I guess everyone here feels this way and there is part of me hoping she can scream loud enough for the universe to change her situation and get her out of here.

When I walk to the bathroom there is the sound of very loud snoring coming from a room at the end of the hall. When I wait in the waiting room there are many characters all day all night that are carrying their own stories.

There is a husband who frantically walks up and down the hall like he is on a mission going somewhere and he just can’t find where. He has an autistic boy who is 10 and a 14 year old daughter; their mom started losing feeling in her feet and it is slowly creeping up her body. She is in icu now.

In our room there is quiet warrior who doesn’t talk a lot. He never complains, he asks how everyone else is; and then there is Ellie.

She is frantically cleaning up the room, changing the view so that he has something new to look at, fluffing his pillows and doing whatever she can to make him more comfortable.

A drawing that Sky did sits in the window; it is a picture she drew of she and Sol sitting under a big tree and it says, “we love you!”

I try to do what I can to make anything a bit easier. Sometimes that means go get Ellie food, sometimes that means give a shoulder massage to Ellie while she is massaging Mark’s hand, sometimes it means I go out of the room to a waiting room so they have time to just talk.

Hospitals are filled with battles everywhere. I can feel all the different battles as I watch people walk down the hall, or sitting in the waiting room, or going to the cafeteria. I am getting used to seeing the same people in the clothes they were in yesterday. All of them are soldiers in this war.

Thank you everyone for all that you are giving. Phone calls and messages and notes and acts of kindness make such a big difference. Thank you for putting on your angel hats. I am sitting in a place with so many angels and Ellie is one of them. ❤️

We’re hoping no news is good news, I still don’t have a doctor update for you guys.

We aunties (Me and Melody, my incredible sister), great-aunties, granddaddy (Pops) and grandmother (Muzzy) are with the kids 24/7 at their house, so that sweet Ella can be by Mark’s side. The kids have gotten to come to the hospital and raid daddy’s snack stash, lots of people have been bringing cards/gifts- it’s so thoughtful!

I’m going to go through the private messages sent here on gofundme today, apologies if you have been waiting on my response! I’m getting a crash course in baby sleep schedules haha!
