One of my dearest friends is going through a very difficult time right now. Her beloved 3 year old Rose Breasted Cockatoo, named Eebey (aka. the PINK CHICKEN) is in intensive care at Night Owl Bird Hospital in Vancouver this Thanksgiving weekend, and she needs all the support we can muster.
Over the last little while, Eebey had been showing signs that something was wrong, and her mum took her on the ferry from Vancouver Island on Thursday, October 4th to see if the specialist doctors at Night Owl could figure out what was going on.
After a number of tests and an overnight trip in Vancouver, it was determined by an ultrasound that this beautiful, sweet, baby bird is in liver failure. She has abscesses all over her liver, and her heart is enlarged. It is suspected to be congenital, but the doctors are doing everything they can to make her comfortable, and hopefully find a way to stabilize her so that she may live out the rest of her life with her family who loves her so much. Eebey is still at Night Owl, and we are waiting for an update from the doctors this morning to hear how she is doing, and if there are any updates to her prognosis.
These birds are normally expected to live for 40-60 years. Having brought home Eebey as a baby, my friend was planning on spending the rest of her life with Eebey by her side, as a companion to grow old with. This terrible situation has left not only her, but all of us, heartbroken.
On Friday October 5th, my friend had to return to Vancouver Island, and leave Eebey in Vancouver. I can't even imagine how heart-wrenching being apart from her during this difficult time must be. This Thanksgiving weekend has turned into something of a nightmare for my friend, and I am determined to help her out in any way I possibly can, starting with this Go Fund Me page.

Eebey is still at Night Owl in Vancouver. The doctors have got her stabilized. She is a fighter. And so is her family. We are hoping to find out more information from the specialists soon so that she may come home to her family. All of your support so far is so greatly appreciated. Thank you, it means so much

Wow! Everybody, thank you so much for all your support. We have reached $920, almost 2/3rds of our goal in just a few days! The veterinary bills for Eebey’s extended stay at Night Owl have of course gone over the initial $1500, but whatever we can pull together is so extremely helpful.
At this time, Eebey’s primary concern is the congenital heart defects. She’s responding well to medications. Her heart arrhythmia has subsided. She is currently on a series of heart and liver medications, antibiotics and supplements. But she’s stable.
The doctors at Night Owl are looking into further testing and specialist x-rays and reports they can do to guarantee 100% accuracy, and hopefully come up with a plan to get Eebey back home to her family.

Eebey is coming home Sunday!!!!! Yay!!!!
Her kidneys are not as bad as they originally seemed. Same as her liver. They’re rechecking her CBC, bile acids and a fecal culture to make sure the antibiotics can be stopped.
Overall it’s her poor heart and an Ecoli infection that has been the culprit of all of this. The thought was that her arrhythmia caused her to chew at her chest, then she created an ongoing infection of Ecoli and staph. Possibly from too many rounds of antibiotics that weren’t quite doing the trick. Could have been from the plane originally? Could have been something from chewing dirt off her mum’s shoe! Who knows. But over all she’s looking much better and doing remarkably well and if it wasn’t for her injectable meds she’d be coming home. They say she’s going bananas and needs more exercise. But she will be home on SUNDAY OCTOBER 21st! HOORAY! And thank you all SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE!

After a conversation with the doctors yesterday, it has been decided that the Chicken is going to stay at Night Owl for another week. She is doing well, but the doctor would like to see her WBC count come down a bit more with the medications they can only administer in hospital. Caitlin is going to go visit her on Sunday still, but one more week until Eebey bird can come home. On another note, we have EXCEEDED our goal through donations. Thank you so much to everyone
