Just when we thought we were going to have some time to recover from the recent kitty interventions for Little Mu and Chaz, we got a desperate call from a longtime friend of the Goathouse. He needed to find emergency help for an older female cat, Flopsy, who had been brutally attacked. Flopsy’s situation was a lot like our tiny kitten Chaz’s case, except while he was just a tiny kitten, she was older and more deeply injured, and barely hanging on to life. The Goathouse went to the rescue again!
Our vet had to set up Flopsy with tubes to drain her wounds. She needed hot compresses, bandage changes, fluids and medications every two hours. Flopsy initially could not move on her own, so our Founder and the staff once again pitched in to pull her through, from changing her position for her every other hour to support her circulation needs, to minding every detail she could not address herself. She is still too weak to stand and needs feeding help. She’s through the worse, and loves to lie her fragile little body on her soft blanket and be petted. She needs some broken bones fixed in her paw so she’s going to need more medical care and surgery at the Orthopedic Surgery Hospital. She is a beautiful old lady with a very sweet face and tender eyes, and we see a lot of gratitude in those eyes. As you can expect, her initial treatment, ongoing medical coverage and upcoming surgery are all financially challenging, and we need help to pay for her out-of-pocket costs.
The Goathouse Refuge exists to help cats and kittens like Mu, Chaz and Flopsy – sweet, loving, funny, gentle kitties and cats in a world of hurt who are not ready to die, but need help now. For such felines, resources are often slim and there’s usually few places that can commit to this care. At the Goathouse Refuge, we make it happen because the work is done by volunteers and a shoe-string staff with giant hearts, but alas, no giant budget – we constantly must raise funds to pay the bills. All the money we use to operate the Refuge and pay for these surgeries is donated by caring, giving people like you, so it’s our community of donors that makes it possible for these kitties to survive and prosper. Watching the joy in these cats as they recover, it’s hard to imagine that there ever was a day when it was as possible each one of them could have died for lack of a place to go. Luckily for many, we are here.
