Treatment for our Daughter

Donation protected
We want to start by saying thank you for taking the time to read this. We live in a busy world where it can be hard to find any time for ourselves. We appreciate that you have gifted us some of that time by reading on. Our daughter suffered abuse by a trusted family member secretly for years. She now struggles with major depressive disorder and suicidal ideation. Though it was hidden well under her smile, charisma, and 4.0 GPA things really came to a head last year.

Multiple hospitalizations and suicide attempts showed us the true nature of her struggle. We took a loan to send her to a wilderness program that we believe has saved her life. She stayed 12 weeks in the desert and never once complained. She carried a 50 lb pack over 50 miles and learned how to bust fires. She worked very hard on herself and on her relationships. It became very clear to parents and professionals working with her that, although she was a star pupil and had dedicated herself to getting the very most out of her experience, she had more work to do in order to learn how to manage her mental and emotional difficulties.

Therapeutic boarding school was strongly recommended and, after her self-advocating for what she needed, we got on board. It doesn't feel like a choice when you look at what eventually happens to folks with the struggles our daughter has who don't receive help.  Multiple therapists have told us that we need to accept that she could one day be successful at taking her life and to find a way to make peace with it. We refuse to do that. Instead we found folks who specialize in helping young woman with struggles like our daughter. Through the help of professionals we finally found the right fit for our girl: a reputable facility known for their work with kids with similar struggles as hers as well as their treatment these young people.

"Joanne", a song by Lady Gaga, with it's line "Girl, where do you think you're going?" became an anthem for our daughter and eventually our family. Though written for Gaga's aunt, who died of lupus at 19, its meaning served as a call to keep fighting, to stay alive to see better days. Our daughter sang it at the top of her lungs many times over on her way to boarding school.

We have decided to put everything we have into our daughter. In our minds there is no better investment. We have donated our wedding fund and savings toward our first home. We have committed to significant lifestyle changes in order to make financially available all we possibly can. Unfortunately we still fall far short of what we will need. I am just returning from checking her into her new home at the therapeudic boarding school. Her first and last month is paid there but we still have to come up with $8,500.00 a month. She's required to be there a minimum of 16 months but it is quite possible she may need to stay even longer. That's a great deal of money for some barely-middle-class folks.

We know our goal is audacious but our daughter's needs leave us no choice. We believe so deeply in this young woman and what she is capable of and truly believe that this time at therapeutic boarding school will give her the opportunity she has needed to reclaim her life. If you feel called to make a contribution we would be beyond grateful. If you can't give but want to support us please repost and keep us in your prayers. It is sad to us that we live in a world that charges so much to get our loved ones the help they need, limiting access to services to the select few but that is our world and we can't change that today.

Thank you again for taking time to read about our journey. We wish you well on whatever path you find yourself on at this time. Blessings from the Angerman- Galactic household to yours!
