Help Us Help Mary

Mary Hendrix Occhipinti is one of the strongest people I have ever met.. If you know her you will agree. However, there comes a time in life that challenges the best of us, and this is such a time for Mary. In the past year, Mary has lost not only the love of her life, her husband Peter; but now tragically, her first born and only daughter, Christin. Mary and her son, Michael, are the only survivors of her immediate family.

You may be familiar with Mary’s background. She married Peter, the love of her life, at a young age, and they had two children, Christin and Michael. In the beginning stages of raising their young family in New Jersey, everything went well until Peter fell victim to heart disease. Rescued from death once, he and Mary moved to Lexington, South Carolina, Mary’s family’s home town, where they began a new life. Mary was the heart and soul of this new beginning, nursing Peter as he recovered. Over the years, she was the rock of their family, earning a living to support their family. Peter contributed as much as he could but the major burden fell on Mary. She was, and has been, the main provider for their family.

Last year, Peter died, a victim of his failing heart. Mary and the children were devastated at his untimely death. His passing left Mary to deal with all of the consequences of the loss of a spouse and the father of their children. Not only financially but emotionally, Mary stood as the bedrock of their family. Now she is experiencing the most dreaded fear of any parent: the unfathomable loss of a child, her beloved daughter Christin.

Many of you have repeatedly asked: “How can I help? Please let me know if I can do anything.” Okay – here’s what you can do. Mary knows nothing about this, but it is a way you can help.

Mary is a self employed court reporter and those of you who know and love her are understandably concerned that this latest tragic blow might render her unable to work, at least for a while, and earn an income.

So, to all of you who have expressed your concern about what you might do to help, this is your chance. Please show your love by contributing whatever you can to support Mary, now that she is struggling with financial matters together with the catastrophic emotional loss of her daughter, and at least alleviate a small burden in her life. Flowers are lovely and thoughtful but do not begin to help as much as concrete aid can. It would be a meaningful and demonstrable show of your love and concern. Please give this your consideration.

Where there is love, there is miracles.
