Help us care for niece and nephew

Donation protected
As many of you know Puerto Rico has been close to devastated by hurricane Maria and much of the island is facing severe resource shortages. Only 25% of the island has somewhat potable water while no part of the island has electricity. With all the damage to the island’s infrastructure food shipments are delayed and the people are running out of food to eat. What’s worse, the Jones Act of 1917 requires all foreign aid be delivered by American vessels and be subject to the U.S. federal government’s approval. This has impeded a lot of foreign aid if not outright denied it.

At the moment any hospitals that are still open are running out of fuel for power generators. Many families have already begun rationing food and have had to wait up to 13 hours in line to buy gas. All of the chaos and desperation has sparked looting and theft across the island. To top it all off, hedge fund or vulture fund capitalists are seizing every opportunity to profit off the island’s tradegy including plotting to privatize the power company.

To minimize the strain on my family, who are living in the midst of this crisis, my oldest sister has asked me to take temporary custody of my 11 and 14 year old niece and nephew. Alex and I are  of course, overjoyed to see our beloved sobrinos, but we were not ready to have to take care of them so soon and we don’t have that much budget to spare. Flight tickets out of Puerto Rico are becoming expensive an we will need money to help pay for the flight. We will also be enrolling them in school here in El Paso at least until the new year for which they’ll need school supplies, clothes, food, after school activities, therapeutic support etc. I will need to ask for time off from work to help look after my family members and our household will need all the financial help that can be spared. Im also 4 1/2 months pregnant. Donations to this campaign won’t just go to help us take care of our family’s children, but excess funds will be sent back to my family still in Puerto Rico as soon as the postal service resumes. Right now, all seven family members are staying in my sister’s house rationing out their remainging food including my grandma whose house was completely flooded.

I wouldn’t be asking for donations if the circumstances weren’t as desperate as they are now. Many thanks to those who have shared their condolences and loving thoughts with us.

If you want to help out other families in Puerto Rico these organization is also collecting to provide relieft aid to PR.

,OPAS (NGO 501c3 non for profit organization )
will concentrate in buying items like chainsaws, water filters, solar power lanterns and solar power chargers for different first necessity equipment like refrigerators. Once communications are restored OPAS will communicate and coordinate directly wIth the municipalities and communities, which were most affected by the hurricane like, Guayama, Toa Baja, Utuado, and many more. We know it will be at least six months before electricity and water will be restored in the most secluded and affected parts of the island. These type of equipments will help bring long term relief to these areas. For example, it is more sustainable and helpful to donate an efficient water filter to a community than one hundred boxes of water gallons. OPAS is an organization dedicated to environmental education and our recovery efforts will reflect our mission, solutions for a more sustainable and resilient island.
