My life once very active, has now been changed forever due to the disorder of Ehlers Danlos, a ligament disorder where all of my ligaments function as if they were stretched out rubber bands. My name is Tyler Simons and I am 28 yrs old, spending most of my days in a recliner due to the severe pain which is caused by EDS and the inability to enjoy movement of my body in the smallest of daily tasks. I was diagnosed at 11 yrs old when I was constantly spraining or breaking ankles and engaging in other injuries due to the hyper joint sublexing. While it was amusing as a young guy to twist my body into all kinds of positions, as an adult, I now can enjoy little activity and even forget what it is like to live with no or little pain. My excellent team of doctors at the Hershey Medical Center have been working together to see the completion of an electric wheelchair, which would be specific to the needs of my body. I am so excited as while I was being fitted for a chair, I had little pain while sitting in a similar one which will be manufactured for my body specifications. I am blessed that my insurance will cover 100% cost of the wheelchair.
My parents divorced 14 yrs ago, leaving my mom with the full time caregiving for me as I also deal with Tourette Syndrome and Rheumetoid Arthritis. While we know that God does and will provide for our daily needs, and having met with the gentleman who educated us about Mobility Vans for transportation, the financial burden of securing a Mobility Van is a little overwhelming. My dad has offered to contribute $10K towards the purchase of a Handicapped Van. My faith is very strong, as it is through God only, which gets me through each day with my multiple disorders. My days in recliner within the four walls gets pretty depressing having been a real active kid and teenager. Now I get excited to go to doctor appointments, if it weren't for the extreme pain while riding in a car and using manual wheelchairs.
It's hard for my mom and me to ask for anything and especially help from others. Financing a Mobility Van is something we cannot afford so our friends have suggested starting a gofundme fundraising event. While it is difficult for many to contribute financially, we would ask an interest in your prayers for healing from continual pain, as only the great physician can give. My mom and I are blessed with all of your friendships, which has been the greatest gift one could ever receive.
