Help Thuha Walk Again

Hi, my name is Thuha (pronounced Tua) and I’m a 5 year old short-haired German Shepherd.

For most of my life I’ve been fortunate enough to spend every day with my owner. He’s a carpenter and I absolutely love going to work with him. I wake up early and can’t wait to set my paws out the door. Leaving for work in the morning is such an exciting part of my day! On weekends I love going on all kinds of adventures, especially to the river. I absolutely love the water! I’ll jump into it, swim through it, and try to chomp it between my teeth whenever it is poured out in front of me.

But, sadly, I haven’t been on many adventures lately. I’ve had degenerative joint disease (arthritis) for several years and this has drastically gone downhill over the last few months. I have been diagnosed with a ruptured cruciate and stenotic lumbosacral joint. On top of these painful issues, I’ve had ongoing seizures (epilepsy) since I was a pup.

Despite the pain I’m in, I have a happy disposition but haven’t been able to go on any walks or adventures over the past few months. I’d also really love the freedom of being able to go back to work with my owner but he has had to leave me at home to rest instead. I need help getting in and out of the car and walking up and down stairs. Some days I am completely immobile. I try so hard to get up and walk but keep stumbling into a laying position and can’t move from there. I’ve been on a strict diet to keep my weight down to a healthy 44kg. It’s a bummer not being able to exercise.

My owner has been purchasing a variety of (expensive) medication and supplements to help with inflammation and the pain in my joints.

My owner really needs help to afford my medication/supplements and to fund the next stages of my treatment. I will need two surgeries with a combined cost of approximately $10,000. It may cost even more.

Here are some more details about my surgeries:

In my right hind leg I have a ruptured cruciate. This is an old injury that is trying to heal but will need surgery at a later date.

Right now my main concern and the main cause of my pain is my lumbosacral joint which is stenotic, causing lots of pressure on my nerves in my lower back running to my legs and I am slowing losing hind limb function. As this is a high priority I am hoping to have this surgery sometime during April 2019 (earlier if possible).

I really want to have my full life back. I want to be able to be with my owner everyday and to enjoy many happy dog adventures again. I’m a very sweet Shepherd and am gentle as a lamb. I always put smiles on people’s faces wherever I go.

Thank you for reading my story and I hope you’re able to help me.
