Help Them Rise From Homelessness
Jackie and JP fell into homelessness in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, after working in the corporate sector for many years.
Jackie continued to try to work, but was fired from one corporate position when it was suspected that she was homeless and lost a contract renewal at another when her supervisor retired. Maintaining traditional work became harder without access to daily showers, etc.
They work by recycling and reselling discarded items both in person and online, and have taken a class on entrepreneurship in the hopes of getting a business license and eventually a brick-and-mortar shop for a resale business catering to college students.
Saving up enough money to get into a stable situation has been difficult; during the winter they need to pay for occasional hotel rooms when the cold is life-threatening, and other costs for basic survival (food, etc) take a toll as well. Since they don't have steady employment (which will be difficult to get until their housing is stable) and haven't had a housing reference for 10 years, they need to be able to provide additional months' rent upfront, and need to have a couple of months' cushion for their rent so that once they get into a stable situation, they will be able to stay there even if an unexpected cost or challenge arises.
They are working with a local social service agency but most of the work and the cost is nonetheless up to them.
We need to work to end the root causes of poverty and homelessness in this country. And we can, at the same time, profoundly change the lives of people who are in need. Please help them out.
