Help the Riverbank Cats

Donation protected
Craig Street Cats has answered a call to help a large colony of cats living along a river bank.  The person who had been caring for them had gone into a personal care home, and could no longer feed the cats.  Since taking care of community cats is what we do, we didn't think twice about accepting this project.

We knew the colony was large.  We didn't know how large.

What we originally thought was 20 to 30 cats, we now believe to be close to 100 cats and kittens.  This is more than a small non-profit can handle.  We need your help.

The project:

-- feed the cats at the same time every day to get them on a regular schedule
-- trap all of the cats and kittens to spay or neuter, vaccinate and provide veterinary care
-- place kittens and friendly adult cats for adoption
-- return unsocialized adult cats to the colony site
-- provide ongoing support for the remaining cats (feeding stations, winter shelter, veterinary care)

The cost:

-- food:  $1,000 / month
-- spay / neuter:  $10,000
-- vaccinations:  $2,000
-- specialized veterinary care (for illness or injury, etc.):  $5,000

The reason:

-- the cats are continuing to multiply.  By next year, there will be over 150 cats, unless action is taken now.
-- trap, neuter, return will humanely reduce the number of cats in the colony.  Removing kittens and friendly adults for adoption will start the downward population trend.  The remaining cats will live out their lives, and the numbers will continue to drop over time.
-- vaccinating the cats will make them healthier, and help prevent the spread of diseases.
-- the remaining cats will be better neighbours, because they will stop doing a lot of nuisance behaviours (fighting, yowling, spraying, etc.)

Note:  to protect the cats we cannot disclose their location.  If you know where they are, please do not post that information.

Craig Street Cats  is a non-profit organization working to humanely reduce the number of cats living on Winnipeg's streets.  We are a registered non-profit, but not a charity.  Your donations, while much needed and greatly appreciated, are not tax deductible.

As of July 24th, 2018, our Community Trappers have brought in 25 adult cats for spay or neuter, and rescued 25 kittens from this colony.  This photo shows one of our Community Trappers with 6 trapped cats, preparing them for transport to our adoption centre.
