Help the Riverbank Cats

$6,602 of $25,000 goal

Raised by 16 people in 19 days
Craig Street Cats has answered a call to help a large colony of cats living along a river bank.  The person who had been caring for them had gone into a personal care home, and could no longer feed the cats.  Since taking care of community cats is what we do, we didn't think twice about accepting this project.

We knew the colony was large.  We didn't know how large.

What we originally thought was 20 to 30 cats, we now believe to be close to 100 cats and kittens.  This is more than a small non-profit can handle.  We need your help.

The project:

-- feed the cats at the same time every day to get them on a regular schedule
-- trap all of the cats and kittens to spay or neuter, vaccinate and provide veterinary care
-- place kittens and friendly adult cats for adoption
-- return unsocialized adult cats to the colony site
-- provide ongoing support for the remaining cats (feeding stations, winter shelter, veterinary care)

The cost:

-- food:  $1,000 / month
-- spay / neuter:  $10,000
-- vaccinations:  $2,000
-- specialized veterinary care (for illness or injury, etc.):  $5,000

The reason:

-- the cats are continuing to multiply.  By next year, there will be over 150 cats, unless action is taken now.
-- trap, neuter, return will humanely reduce the number of cats in the colony.  Removing kittens and friendly adults for adoption will start the downward population trend.  The remaining cats will live out their lives, and the numbers will continue to drop over time.
-- vaccinating the cats will make them healthier, and help prevent the spread of diseases.
-- the remaining cats will be better neighbours, because they will stop doing a lot of nuisance behaviours (fighting, yowling, spraying, etc.)

Note:  to protect the cats we cannot disclose their location.  If you know where they are, please do not post that information.

Thank you, so much, for your generous support. You have helped many cats with your donations, but there is much more left to do. Costs for this project keep going up. A very pregnant mom came in during our last trapping session. She has had her babies at the adoption centre. A second very pregnant mom came in today. Another litter has been born at the colony site -- the first kitten was seen earlier this week. These cats need your help to stop the endless breeding cycle. Please give, then share, and share some more!

Kittens from the river bank colony are growing up big and strong. Many are ready for spay or neuter and adoption, many more will be ready in the next few weeks. They all need your help to make sure they get the care they need, including vaccinations, surgery, deworming, food, toys and supplies. Please help, share, and share some more!

So far, our amazing Community Trappers have brought in 25 adult cats for spay or neuter, and rescued 25 kittens. Mr. Big Cheeks, shown in this photo, is the big daddy of the colony. When we try to trap, he marches back and forth between the traps to chase away any silly cats that might want to go in for the yummy food at the back of the trap! During our last session he succumbed to the temptation of KFC. No more kitten making for Mr. Big Cheeks!

None of this work would be possible without your help. Another 50 adult cats are living in the colony. We hope to spay or neuter them all before winter. With your help, it is possible.
