Help the Edel Family Heal!

Kristin and Rod Edel’s friends ask that you help us lend support to a wonderful family going through a devastating time.

In January of 2018 Kristin Edel was diagnosed with myeloid sarcoma of the brain and spine (she is one of five known people with this extremely rare condition.) In addition, Kristin suffers from central nervous system lymphoma. She has four significant tumors. One on her brain that is situated by her optic nerve (which causes double vision and terrible headaches), and three on her spine that contribute to her many falls and regular need for a walker.

The toll Kristin’s illness has taken on her family has been extreme, the stress unimaginable. The Edel family’s struggle got so much worse when Kristin’s forty-nine-year-old husband, Rod, died in his sleep on May 16th, 2019.

Kristin says, “Rod was by my side constantly, driving me up to Portland for chemo and radiation—he stayed with me during my many extended hospitalizations. His continued care of me kept him from spending the time needed to keep our business thriving.”

With no life insurance, substantial medical bills piling up, three children to support, and a dire medical condition (which has doctors stumped on how to treat), Kristin is beyond overwhelmed. “I’m embarrassed to ask for help. I’m not a person who does that.”

Kristin and Rod share three beautiful children. Avery, eighteen, is a senior in high school. “There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for you. He’s so smart and kind. He plays the piano, guitar, and trumpet. He’s funny like his dad. He’s my rock,” Kristin says.

Lauren is sixteen and a sophomore in high school. “She’s my shy girl. She’s so hard working. She loves to dance and wants to be a teacher when she grows up. She’s the kind of person you can tell anything to. When Lauren is your friend, she’ll be your friend forever.”

Addison is the youngest of the Edel children at eight. “Addie is spunky and unafraid. She’s smart and busy and so outgoing. People just love her.”

Kristin says, “I’ll never have a fiftieth wedding anniversary like my parents [Rod died a month before their twentieth], I can’t run marathons anymore, I can’t even play with my kids. My health issues and Rod’s death have caused them all to grow up too fast. It’s my greatest hope that I can get well and live long enough to see them living their own lives. My heart breaks that my husband won’t have that opportunity.”

Please help us give Kristin the peace of mind to know she can pay her bills and care for her family, so that she can put all of her energy into trying to heal her body. Any donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated!
