Help Support Mary Jackson

Spende geschützt
My sister, Mary (Baslee) Jackson, was critically injured on the night of January 15, 2019 when she was struck by a speeding hit and run auto while walking across Soscol Avenue in Napa. She has worked for Trans Dev Services in the Napa Valley for 15 years as a senior bus driver, with an exemplary safety record, and was in the process of routinely ending her shift and transferring her bus to her relief when the incident occurred. The auto and its driver escaped into the night. A suspect was arrested by Napa police 24 hours later. Mary's family would sincerely appreciate anyone with additional relevant information about the incident contacting the Napa Police Department.

In the meantime, Mary is fighting for her life in the Intensive Care Unit at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa. She has suffered a fractured skull, fractures of both legs and both arms, broken ribs, collarbone, and shoulder, several vertebrae, internal injuries, and many abrasions. She has a ventilator tube in place that prevents her from speaking. Her eyes are swollen shut and she temporarily cannot see. A bolt has been placed in her head to relieve cranial swelling, and since her vital signs have been somewhat stabilized, she is now medicated for pain. The good news is that she is responsive to sound and can hear the medical staff and words of encouragement from her family arrayed around her. Her injuries are extensive and will require months if not years of treatment, a series of surgeries, and physical therapy. Much of this will not be covered by her health insurance due to exclusions and exceeding maximums.

Because I know my sister,I know that Mary's second priority (after getting well) will be concerning finances. Aside from the difficulty that all service employees face who want to stay in their homes in the ever-more costly Napa Valley, four years ago Mary's husband died without life insurance, leaving her with his medical and funeral bills, and the loss of his social security income. By working a lot of overtime and being frugal, Mary has survived and been able to stay in her modest rented home of 30 years in Napa. But while she was off work for several months for back surgery recently her limited savings were used up, and only when she went back to work just last month was she able to start putting money aside again for emergencies. And now this. The reality is that she may not be physically able to go back to work at all, much less work overtime as her job often requires. Only lots of time will tell.

Mary needs to concentrate on the momentous task of getting better without having to face the specter of financial ruin. She has always made her own way in the world, so the act of asking for financial help from the community where she lives and has served so long and so well goes against her grain. But many have offered to help at this time and this seems the best way for them to do so. Mary and her family are grateful for any contributions and the good will that goes with them.
