Hello friends,
For those who did not know, Student Government at the University of Florida changed their entire funding structure this school year. Because of this change, AASA had to break away from AASU and apply to be its own recognized organization in order to receive enough funding. The application process started July 1st and we were proactive in getting all the necessary steps completed right away. We were officially approved as a new organization on July 17th and proceeded to submit our event budget request to Student Government. We received a call on Thursday, August 1st from the chair of the allocations committee in charge of approving budget request with disheartening news that Student Government has run out of money to fund any more Fall events. The last organization to receive money submitted their request on July 15th, two days before we were approved to be an organization.
We have been meeting with faculty, school departments, and Student Government these past couple of days to find solutions. We are working on several back-up options to find funding and Student Government has given us the solution of receiving funding through the operational budgets of other organizations. We greatly appreciate the generosity of these organizations to give a portion of their operational budgets, however, we would like to refrain from taking away a lot of money from these organizations as they also did not receive any funding for their Fall events.
Over 1,200 attendees attend AASA, therefore, the Phillips Center is the only venue in Gainesville that can fit everyone. We have worked to cut all unnecessary costs but the Phillips Center still remains a heavy expense. Dancers, choreographers, and AASA committee have been working hard these past couple of months, and we do not want all of their hard work to go to waste.
Over 7% of the student body at UF identify as Asian Americans. This makes Asian Americans the second largest minority group on campus. Moreover, AASA is not an Asian American exclusive event, but has welcomed and attracted students with other identities as well as faculty members to attend. For the past 26 years, AASA has held profound significance to the students, alumni, and surrounding community. It is one of the first community events that first-years attend and many have said that because of this assembly, they were introduced to their current involvement and community at UF.
The event is coming up very soon on Friday, August 23rd so we have decided to open up this GoFundMe for anyone that would like to help fund AASA. There is no amount too small or unappreciated. We are thankful for any support you may be able to provide.
