Sonny Needs a New Apartment

Donation protected
We first met Sonny in front of Ken’s Market where he was selling Real Change, a community newspaper in Seattle. Sonny became somewhat of a fixture in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood; a friendly face in front of our local market. Recently, we noticed that Sonny was absent and another vendor had taken his place.

Soon we learned that Sonny--his real name is Abias Crosby--had some serious health problems that has affected his mobility. You see, Sonny, 64-years old, lives in a third floor apartment in North Seattle, but it’s impossible for him to go up and down the stairs. His legs don't work anymore and there's no elevator.  To get to a doctor's appointment, he has to be carried up and down his stairs. Safeway delivers groceries and occasionally friends will bring some food by.

He is a prisoner in his apartment with little money and has a lease that he will have to break in order to move. The VA--Sonny is a marine veteran-- is still trying to figure out why he has no strength in his legs. He recently went through a battery of tests; he may have cancer or a bad kidney; the doctors aren’t sure yet. But they do know that his current living situation is not sustainable.

Sonny was recently profiled in a Real Change article. Please read the article to learn a bit more about this wonderful man. He is one of the many people living on the edge of homelessness and if it weren’t for good people helping him he might just fall through the cracks.

Sonny asked us if we would help him raise enough money to get out of his lease and move into a ground-floor apartment. He has no savings, so he will need help with breaking his lease (the landlord won't budge) and paying the first and last month’s rent and deposit. He estimates this will cost around $4,000 (we may adjust this down if our legal help can get him out of his lease at no or minimal cost). All funds raised through this campaign will go directly to Sonny to use in moving to a new apartment. Any funds left over after paying for the move, will be Sonny's to use to help him with his living expenses given that he no longer can work.

Sometimes you meet people and you ask yourself, “how can I help?” This is how. Would you please consider helping Sonny? Thank you.
