Sonny Needs a New Apartment

$4,200 of $6,000 goal

We first met Sonny in front of Ken’s Market where he was selling Real Change, a community newspaper in Seattle. Sonny became somewhat of a fixture in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood; a friendly face in front of our local market. Recently, we noticed that Sonny was absent and another vendor had taken his place.

Soon we learned that Sonny--his real name is Abias Crosby--had some serious health problems that has affected his mobility. You see, Sonny, 64-years old, lives in a third floor apartment in North Seattle, but it’s impossible for him to go up and down the stairs. His legs don't work anymore and there's no elevator.  To get to a doctor's appointment, he has to be carried up and down his stairs. Safeway delivers groceries and occasionally friends will bring some food by.

He is a prisoner in his apartment with little money and has a lease that he will have to break in order to move. The VA--Sonny is a marine veteran-- is still trying to figure out why he has no strength in his legs. He recently went through a battery of tests; he may have cancer or a bad kidney; the doctors aren’t sure yet. But they do know that his current living situation is not sustainable.

Sonny was recently profiled in a Real Change article. Please read the article to learn a bit more about this wonderful man. He is one of the many people living on the edge of homelessness and if it weren’t for good people helping him he might just fall through the cracks.

Sonny asked us if we would help him raise enough money to get out of his lease and move into a ground-floor apartment. He has no savings, so he will need help with breaking his lease (the landlord won't budge) and paying the first and last month’s rent and deposit. He estimates this will cost around $4,000 (we may adjust this down if our legal help can get him out of his lease at no or minimal cost). All funds raised through this campaign will go directly to Sonny to use in moving to a new apartment. Any funds left over after paying for the move, will be Sonny's to use to help him with his living expenses given that he no longer can work.

Sometimes you meet people and you ask yourself, “how can I help?” This is how. Would you please consider helping Sonny? Thank you.

I t's been a while since the last update. Sorry, it's taken so long. I was hopeful that Sonny was just about to get into a new apartment but it has yet to work out. Here is a message from Sonny.

"I would like to thank each and every individual that has helped me in my trying times. I believed I would be better, back on my feet in a few months, but it seems I won't . Because of chronic kidney and liver disease and the edema in my legs, I still cannot get around and am confined to a wheel chair in my third floor apartment with no elevator.

Your assistance has allowed me to survive this ordeal. I haven't found an apartment yet. I was turned down by several other apartments because of several debts in collection which have now been paid.

I still need help, unfortunately, because I have already used most of the money raised in trying to get by with very limited disability income and no ability to work anymore due to my disability. If you can find it in your heart to contribute an additional amount, I will be forever grateful to you.

I will keep trying thanks to all of you. I have made it this far. Thank you.

Good bless all of you,
Sonny."

Many of you have asked me if there's anything else you can do for Sonny. Well, Sonny is in need of assistance this week. He is getting a ride from Hopelink to the VA hospital on Wednesday (Jan 31) for an important appointment at 2PM. But as Sonny explains it, he needs someone to help him down the stairs to the van. In fact, the helper has to be willing to carry Sonny down the two flights of stairs into a wheelchair. Are any of our angels able to be at his apartment in Lake City on Wednesday from 12:45-1:15 PM? It should take at most 15-30 minutes of your time.

If you can make it, please contact me via GoFundMe and I will give you Sonny's contact info where you can arrange to help him. Thanks so much!

In only 4 weeks, we have achieved our goal of raising $4,000 for our dear friend, Sonny! Wow. And the last donation was the biggest of all -- by a lot -- last night, a very generous neighbor, Stefanie, donated $1,445 to bring us to the goal. Thank you so very much, Stefanie, for putting us over with such a amazingly generous donation. And thank you to all 42 of our donors!

Regarding Sonny...First of all, he is ecstatic and so thankful for the outpouring of love and support. He is still in his 3rd floor and apartment. And he is still going to various appointments at the VA medical center. In fact, he has an appointment tomorrow. Last week he got a reconditioned laptop for $200 (which he was able pay for thanks to the funds raised) and I went over there and setup his internet connection (he couldn't figure it out). He has been looking for apartments and he hopes to find something soon.

Oh, and our neighborhood legal wiz (and donor), Patricia, has successfully helped Sonny out of his current 1-year lease and switched him over to a month-to-month agreement. And several people have offered to help move Sonny when the time comes.

We will keep the campaign open for a while, at least until Sonny moves or he asks me to take it down.

All the best,
Paul & Suzanna

Updating the 40 angels out there who have donated to Sonny's campaign. Together, we have raised a total of $2,530 for this struggling friend of ours. Suzanna and I visited Sonny last night and I setup his refurbished laptop computer that he can now use to check his email, order food deliveries from Safeway, and start looking for a new apartment. And one of Sonny's donors, Patricia, is assisting Sonny in getting out of his lease.

Sonny would like to thank each of you individually but that probably won't happen due to his fragile nature and the limited info that GoFundMe gives us. But pretty soon I will either have him type or dictate to me a message to you all. Thank you so much!
