Hey y’all, I’m Sheena Naomi McGrath and I’m another trans woman making another gofundme page to raise funds for a life-saving surgery! Before I go on about the surgery, a little about me:
I’m the greatest drummer of our generation. I currently play with Columbus, Ohio-based didi and Brooklyn-based Aye Nako. I've been drumming since I was 8 and have been playing for touring bands since I was a teenager. I was probably in some of your favorite DIY punk bands c. 2007-2012?? I've also been a volunteer instructor for girls rock camps in Columbus and Athens, Ohio. Here's a vid of me drumming
If you're pressed for time skip to 2:40 for a sick outro and indubitable evidence that I'm the greatest drummer of our generation!! Please help make me the hottest, too, and allow me to SAFELY PASS by unknowing cis people who want to kill me. Honestly though, I cannot emphasize enough how much safer I will be in public once I have these procedures done. I don’t want to deal with the glares anymore. I do not want to deal with the harassment and threats.
In 2012 I started transitioning publicly and taking hormones. I had to drive to Columbus, Ohio, to get a prescription since there was nowhere in Indiana I could get it. That summer I moved to Columbus, got a legal name change, and filled out job applications with my new name for the first time.
Over the years HRT has helped me tremendously, but it isn’t enough to help me reliably pass or to alleviate the toughest parts of dysphoria I have regarding my face. Being out in the world with my face as it is is a big source of anxiety and dread—I notice people staring at me and I look down and try to hide. With my new face I see myself holding my chin up and being the first to smile at a strangers. I see others seeing me accurately. I see me happy to look at the face looking back at me, in any angle, with any lighting. And I can begin to imagine what it would be like to lose that anxiety and dread, and how I could channel all that wasted energy into music and creative practice.
The quote above is from Dr. Cardenas’ practice in Guadalajara, Mexico. I’ve opted to go with him because he is very experienced and affordable compared to cost of getting these procedures done without health coverage in the United States. The quote includes some meals and accommodations for myself and a guest/caretaker (my girlfriend) for 10 nights while I recover, but this quote does not include other expenses, such as:
2 roundtrip plane tickets to Guadalajara: ~$1000
Dog sitter: $300
Cat sitter: $200
Lost wages for me and gf: $2000
Unforeseen expenses / “Shit happens”: $1260+?
Anything raised here that does not go into my surgery- and recovery-related expenses will be rerouted to other fundraisers for trans women seeking surgeries. Maybe it’ll help pay for an abortion, who knows.
What I want is freedom when I enter the world, and euphoria when I look in the mirror.
