Help Send New Refugee Kids to Camp

Three weeks ago our dear friends—and Ellis’ classroom bestie—welcomed a newly resettled Congolese family into their home: a single mother and three children, a 2½ year old daughter and two brothers, 5 and 8. It’s been a joyful experience getting to know this amazing family, and see their bright and smiling faces. But now both families are at a critical juncture and Robyn and I have jumped in to help them out.
While there are resources available for recent Northampton refugees, there are no plans for the children to be active this summer. There is a deposit for the two school-aged brothers to attend 9 weeks of summer camp at the People's Institute in Northampton, MA. We strongly believe that attending camp will significantly contribute to the overall wellbeing of this new American family. We are starting this fundraiser to help make this possible.
The children are very bright, curious, and eager to learn. They attended school in their refugee camp in Burundi and are excited to attend Jackson Street School in the fall. Summer camp would give the children a chance to learn English and socialize with peers. This opportunity is critical for a successful transition into our amazing community and into school this September.
Catholic Charities of Springfield and the Circles of Care made the family’s arrival in the US possible and continue to support the family in many wonderful ways. We are not affiliated with either of these organizations, but are committed to the wellbeing of this family. We are spearheading this fundraiser in the best interest of this family.
Funding needs: The summer camp fee is $2,970 in total but we seek a marginally higher amount to cover the $0.30 per donation and 2.9% GoFundMe fees. Any amount collected above our goal will go to support this single mother and her family.
